Bible Statements about Religion
The Bible addresses the idea of religion, but not as often or directly as expected. The only clear references are found in the New Testament, reflecting a difficulty to define religion. The ancient world intertwined spirituality, identity and culture that defined religion. Greek and Roman philosophy, followed by Christianity, contributed to the modern theme we now describe as religious belief.
Biblical references to “religion” usually focus on behavior. Below are just a few verses about the ‘Christian religion’.
James 1:27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world. (KJV)
Matthew 5:27-28 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: 28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. (KJV)
Mathew 7:21-23 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. (KJV)
Matthew 19:16-20 And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? 17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments. 18 He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, 19 Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. (KJV)
Mark 7:9-13 And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition. 10 For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, Whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death: 11 But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free. 12 And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother; 13 Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye. (KJV)
Luke 11:42-44 But woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass over judgment and the love of God: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. 43 Woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye love the uppermost seats in the synagogues, and greetings in the markets. 44 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are as graves which appear not, and the men that walk over them are not aware of them. (KJV)
Romans 14:17-18 For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost. 18 For he that in these things serveth Christ is acceptable to God, and approved of men. (KJV)
1 Tim. 1:4-5 Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do. 5 Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned: (KJV)
1 Tim. 5:3-4 Honour widows that are widows indeed. 4 But if any widow have children or nephews, let them learn first to shew piety at home, and to requite their parents: for that is good and acceptable before God. (KJV)
TRUE religion involves helping others in distress and continuing our personal holiness. Jesus very often criticized any hollow, hypocritical behavior that was not rooted in sincere faith, as you can see with the above Scriptures.
Religion that our Awesome God accepts as pure and faultless is simply to look after orphans and widows in their suffering and NOT let the world pollute us. 1 John 2:15-16 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. (KJV)
We must understand what John means by the “world.” He is NOT talking about the Creation, the Earth. What he means is the world system that is headed by Satan. Before we go any further, let me assure you that there is a devil! He is alive and well (Job 1:12; 2:7; Mat.4:1; 25:41; John 8:44; 13:2; 1 Peter 5:8). John says if we “love the world” God’s love is NOT in us. WHY? Because loving the world and what is offered by the devil is the completely opposite of what God wants for us. God wants us to love HIM!
Characteristics of worldliness are ungodly:
#1. Lust . . . this is satisfying your physical desires; food, alcohol, drugs, cigarettes, sex, etc.
#2. Materialism . . . craving and accumulating things: cars, jewelry, real estate, anything that the Jones’ have.
#3. Pride . . . this is being obsessed with your status and/or importance, or power or fame. Eve was tempted in the Garden in all three areas (Gen.3:6), as was Jesus in the wilderness (Mat.4:1-11). We must not be like Eve and give in to temptation . . . we must be like Jesus and resist temptation. Rest assured . . . He will help us.
ALL worldly things: evil desires, the mad craze for illicit sex, wanting to buy any and all that appeals to you, pride that boosts your ego, that comes from wealth, power and fame . . . NONE of these are from God. They all are from the devil! Beware!
A new religion has infiltrated the hearts and minds of not only American culture but of America’s churches. What was once simply a characteristic of human nature running directly opposite to the central distinctive marks of a disciple of Christ Jesus has now been formed into a religion that has outgrown and undermined TRUE Christianity. https://www.godcannotlie.org/true_children_of_god.htm
