Are Mormons the Fastest Growing Religion?
The Mormon religion is the fastest growing faith group in American history according to "U.S. News & World Report," which reports that if present trends continue, there could be 265 million members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS) worldwide by 2080.
Mormons have launched a major expansion program to keep up with growth, opening 32 temples across the country this year. There are now 100 temples internationally, serving 11 million Mormons.
One reason for the LDS increase is that its message "strikes a spiritual resonance in people." Mormons are aggressively missionary minded. Last year the church sent out almost 60,000 missionaries to 120 countries, where they won over 300,000 converts.
LDS teaching stresses the church's commitment to traditional and family values, and they downplay its past beliefs in polygamy and racism [??]. Critics say that Mormons may use the same terminology as mainstream Christians use . . . BUT they often attach a completely different meaning to the terms.
Is Mormonism a Christian religion?
Mormons persistently and stubbornly claim to be Christians. Mormons clearly uphold themselves to be Christians. These words are resounded by members and missionaries alike.
BUT, claiming to be Christian does NOT automatically make Mormonism a Christian religion. Nor does including Jesus’ Name in their church name make it so. Many other people and religions make this claim but they are NOT recognized as being Christian by traditional Christian churches.
SO, Just What is a Christian?
The dictionary defines a Christian as “one who professes belief in the teachings of Jesus Christ.” So, IF we keep with this commonly held definition, the key to determining whether Mormonism is Christian or not is determining if its teachings are what Jesus taught.
Does the Mormon church teach what Jesus taught?
One of the foundation beliefs of Christianity is that the Bible accurately conveys Jesus’ teachings. Therefore, it is the standard by which all beliefs must be evaluated.
Consider some of the following Mormon teachings.
Let’s take a look at some of the teachings of the Bible and compare them with LDS doctrine.
How is Mormonism different from Christianity?
Mormons are some of the kindest and friendliest people we could know. Their views on family and morality is not far different from that of Christians. And they do call themselves Christians.
But there some major differences between Mormons and Christians when it comes to how they view God, the Bible, salvation, etc.? There are significant differences.
History of Christianity
Christianity, as we know it today, goes back to the mid 30’s A.D. Acts 2 records the events of Pentecost and the coming of the Holy Spirit to indwell the disciples, who became apostles. Many theologists see this as the birth of the church. Although one could also argue that the roots of Christianity date back to the dawn of human history, since the Bible (both Old and New Testaments) is an awe-inspiring Christian Book. By the end of the 1st century A.D., Christianity was well organized and spreading rapidly throughout the known world.
History of Mormonism
Mormonism only dates to the 19th century A.D. Joseph Smith Jr., was born in 1805. Smith would go on to found what is now known as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, the Mormon Church.
Smith claims that when was 14 he experienced a vision in which God the Father instructed him that all churches were wrong. Three years later, an angel named Moroni visited Smith several times. This would lead to Smith recovering engraved golden plates (which are today non-extant), in the woods near his home, written in a language he called “Reformed Egyptian”.
Smith allegedly translated these golden plates into English and that is what is now known as the Book of Mormon. This wasn’t printed until 1830. Smith claims that in 1829, John the Baptist gave to him the Aaronic Priesthood, establishing Joseph Smith as the leader of the new movement.
Mormon Doctrine vs Christianity
The Doctrine of God Christianity
The Bible teaches, and Christians believe in ONE God, Who was/is the Creator of Heaven and Earth. Christians believe that the Creator God is sovereign and self-existent and immutable (unchanging) and good. Christians believe that God is a Triune God . . . meaning that God is ONE God, and has eternally existed in three Persons: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.
The Doctrine of Mormonism
What Mormons believe about God have varied widely over their short history. In the early years, Mormon leader Brigham Young taught that Adam was the father of the spirit of Jesus, and that Adam is God. Mormon’s today do not believe this and many have disputed whether Brigham Young was properly understood.
But Mormons unquestionably teach a doctrine called eternal progression. They teach that God was once a man and was capable of physical death, but He progressed to become God the Father. Mormons teach that mankind can also become gods.
Mormons believe that gods, angels, people and devils are all basically of the same substance, but that are merely at different places in the eternal progression.
The Christian Doctrine of the Deity of Christ
Christians believe that Christ Jesus is absolutely the Son of God, the second Member of the Trinity. When Jesus was born, the “Word became flesh and dwelt among us” (John 1:14). Christians believe that Jesus has existed eternally and is truly God. Col. 2:9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. (KJV)
Mormon Doctrine of Christ
Mormons believe that Jesus was pre-existent, but before His Birth, He was not God. Mormons believe that Jesus is our elder brother from the great star, Kolob. Mormons clearly, although complicatedly, DENY the full deity of Jesus Christ.
Christian Doctrine of the Trinity
Christians believe that God is three Persons in ONE God, meaning a Trinity. He is ONE God, consisting of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. So, Christians baptize in the Name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit (Mat.28:19).
Mormon Doctrine of the Trinity
Mormons say that the doctrine of the Trinity is a false and pagan belief. Mormons see the Godhead as similar to the “First Presidency” of the church, meaning they see the Father as God, and Jesus and the Holy Spirit as the president’s two counselors.
Joseph Smith criticized the Biblical understanding of God in a sermon on June 16, 1844 (days before his death). He said, “Many men say there is one God: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost are only one God. I say that is a strange God anyhow; three in one, and one in three!
“It is a curious organization … All are to be crammed into one God, according to sectarianism. It would make the biggest God in all the world. He would be a wonderfully big God—He would be a giant or a monster.” (Cited from the Teachings, p. 372)
Salvation beliefs of Mormons and Christians
Christianity
Evangelical Christians believe that salvation is the free gift of God (Eph.2:8-9); that a person is justified by faith alone, based on Christ’s substitutionary atonement on the cross (Rom.5:1-6). And the Bible teaches that all people are sinful and unable to save themselves (Rom.1-3), and therefore, it is only by God’s intervening grace that anyone can be brought back into a right relationship with God.
Mormonism
Mormons believe a very complex and different system of views on salvation. #1. Mormons believe in the universal salvation of all people through the work of Jesus Christ. This is often referred to as universal or general salvation in Mormon literature. #2. And Mormons believe that salvation is acquired through “gospel obedience”, meaning faith, repentance, baptism, receiving the Holy Spirit, and last but not least . . . by completing “mortal probation” by living a righteous life. This enables them to progress in their eternal progression.
Christian Doctrine of the Holy Spirit
Christians believe that the Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Trinity, and as such He has a personality and has existed eternally (Gen.1:26; 11:7). He is, and always has been God.
Mormon Doctrine of the Holy Spirit
Mormons, by direct opposition believe that the Holy Spirit, whom they always refer to as the Holy Ghost, became God in pre-existence through the eternal progression. They do affirm the Holy Spirit’s personality. Mormon teacher Bruce McConkie denied that the Holy Spirit could possibly be omnipresent (Mormons also deny that the Father and the Son are omnipresent).
Christian Doctrine of the Atonement
Christians believe that the atonement was God’s gracious work in Christ, Who took the place of sinful man and absorbed sinful man’s just penalty for sin. Christians believe that Jesus’ Work on the Cross satisfied God’s justice and allowed man to be reconciled to God. What the Bible states about atonement: Mat.20:28; Mark 10:45; John 10:11, 14-18; Rom. 3:25; 4:25; 5:9; 6:1-7; 7:4-6; 8:3; Gal.1:4; 2:19-20; 3:13-14; 6:14; Eph.1:7; 2:6-7,13; 5:2; Col.1:13-14; 1 Cor.5:7; 11:23-25; 15:3-8; 2 Cor.5:15,21; Heb.4:15; 1 Pet.1:18-19; 2:22-24; 3:18; 1 John 1:7; 2:2; 3:5,16; 4:10; Heb.2:9; 7:26-28; 8:6-7; 9:12-15, 24-28; 10:10-14,19-20; Rev.5:6,9; 7:14.
ANYONE, no matter who, that denies these Scriptures is calling our awesome Creator God a “Liar.” 1 John 5:10 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. (KJV)
Mormon Doctrine of the Atonement
Mormons have a very complex and multipart, and very often change their opinion of the atonement. Third Nephi 8-9 (Book of Mormon) teaches that Jesus brought death and destruction with the Cross and that His death on the Cross meant wrath and destruction for historical cities like Mocum, Onihum, etc. Mormons absolutely DENY that the atonement is the basis for salvation.
Christians vs Mormons
Christianity
Christians believe that ALL TRUE Christians make up the TRUE church. Theologians often mean this reality as the universal or invisible church. It is what Paul referred to in 1 Corinthians 1:2 . . . meaning all those who in all places call upon the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
And, TRUE Christians believe that the local church is a group of Christians who voluntarily agree to worship God together as a church (Rom.16:5).
Mormonism
Since their very beginning, Mormons have denied and rejected all other churches outside of the Mormon church. Many times Mormon leaders and teachers refer to the Christian church as the “church of the devil” or the “church of abomination” (1 Nephi 14:9-10).
Today, hardly ever is that sort of directness outward in Mormon publications. Nevertheless, historically and canonically (according to writings Mormons hold sacred), this is how the Mormons view the Christian church.
Christianity Belief of Life After Death
Christians believe that there is life after physical death for everyone. When those who are saved by faith in Christ die, they depart to be with Christ (Phil 1:23). They will all eventually dwell with God in the New Heaven and New Earth. Those who perish in their sin will suffer eternal punishment, far away from the Presence of God (Mat.25:41; Luke 16:23; 2 Thes.1:9).
Mormonism Belief of Life After Death
Mormons believe that in both eternal damnation and eternal life, but what they believe is different from the Bible and Christians. A person who will suffer eternal damnation is essentially forfeiting, by his misdeeds and unfaithfulness, the benefits of eternal life. They are not allowed to progress on to eventually become gods. It seems they do “attain a kingdom of glory”, but NOT one where God and Christ are. (See “Mormon Doctrine” by Bruce McConkie, page 235).
Those who do reach eternal life are eligible for eternal progression, the process over time of becoming gods. Just as God the Father progressed to become God, so they themselves will eventually attain deity.
Christianity Belief about Humans
Christians believe that man is made in the image of God. Each person is part of God’s design, and his or life (and existence) begins at conception.
Mormonism Belief about Humans
Mormons believe that all people had a pre-mortal existence. They also believe that all people were spiritually born on a planet near Kolob, the great star.
Christianity’s Belief About the Bible
TRUE Christians believe that the Bible is the sole infallible authority for life and faith.
Mormonism Belief About the Bible
Mormons, believe that the Bible is a part of the Canon of Scripture, but they add to it several Mormon works: The Book of Mormon, The Doctrines of the Covenant, and The Pearl of Great Price. All of these should be interpreted together, and from them all can the true teaching of God can be made clear. Mormons also hold the infallibility of the sitting President of the Church, at least when acting in his official teaching and prophetic capacity.
SO . . . Are Mormonism Christians?
As I have already stated above, a TRUE Christian is a person who totally trusts in the finished work of Christ Jesus alone.
Eph. 2:1-10 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; 2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: 3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. 4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, 5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) 6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: 7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. (KJV)
A TRUE Christian believes in what Christ has done, NOT our own righteousness, that makes a person acceptable to God (Phil 3:9). A person is a Christian only by faith in Jesus Christ. It is only through faith, based on Christ’s work on the Cross, that anyone can ever be justified before God the Father (Rom.5:1). https://www.godcannotlie.org/true_children_of_god.htm

Since Mormons absolutely DENY this Biblical TRUTH (IF they believe what the Mormon church teaches). Their view of salvation is a mixture of works and grace, with the greater importance placed on works. Even though Mormons are very kind and moral people, they are calling my God a LIAR! (1 John 5:10). So, HOW can anyone call Mormons Christians in the Biblical sense of Christianity???
