The Christian Religion
Acts 17:20-21 For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean. 21 (For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.) (KJV)
In this same way America is going to seed today. These talk shows . . . everyone is trying to come up with something new. Each one is trying to say something to gain attention. Athens was like this. Talk, talk, talk! They just talked, submitting new theories and new ideas . . . just like today's churches!
Some say that Paul failed on Mars' Hill. I disagree. I think that was one of the greatest messages that Paul ever preached.
Acts 17:22 Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious. (KJV)
Paul begins his message quite formally, "Ye men of Athens." Then he says, "I perceive... ye are too superstitious." The word superstitious is totally inadequate to say what Paul really means. He is saying that he thinks they are in all things too religious. Those in Athens very religious . . . Athens was filled with idols to multiple gods. There was no end to the "gods" of the Athenians and the Greeks. There were small gods and big gods . . . they had a god for almost everything, just like Egypt. Paul said they were too religious, they had far too many "gods."
You have heard people say: "Those people have their own religion." But I am here to tell you that only TRUE Christianity will ever get a person to Heaven! ONLY Jesus has the key to Heaven's gate! John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. (KJV) . . . You either BELIEVE Him or spend eternity in Hell! YOUR choice!
James says religion that does not produce self-control is “worthless.”
James 1:26 If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain. (KJV)
If any man among you seem to be religious . . . . religious = pious, devout . . . by his preaching, or praying and other duties of religion, and "thinks he is religious" or is thought to be so by others.
And bridleth not his tongue . . . brags about how good he is, BUT speaks poorly of his brethren; backbites them, hurting their names and characters, by private insinuations and public charges without any foundation (Ps.35:19; Jn.15:25); who does not care what he says, but allows his tongue liberty of speaking anything, to the injury of others, and the dishonor of God, and His ways . . . . seems what is meant here (Ps.39:1).
But deceiveth his own heart . . . this person deceives NO one but himself! His show of religion, on which he builds his hopes of salvation; will do him NO good at all.
This man's religion is vain . . . useless and unprofitable to himself and others. None of his preaching or praying will be of any avail to him. Instead, he by his evil tongue, brings a scandal and reproach upon the ways of God, and doctrines of Christ. Psalms 34:13-14 Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile. 14 Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it. (KJV)
Religion can be warped when it becomes its own focus. Biblical Christianity speculates an ultimate purpose both behind and beyond the characteristics used to define a “religion.” The details matter, but they are not faith as a whole. This was a key point of Christ’s teaching. It made up the bulk of His routine scolding the religious leaders, whose priorities were just as misplaced as are some of today’s leaders and polititians. Luke 11:52 Woe unto you, lawyers! for ye have taken away the key of knowledge: ye entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in ye hindered. (KJV)
Romans 3:20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. (KJV) Rituals, prayers, denominations, or other survived aspects of faith become gods unto themselves and is the kind of religion against which Scripture speaks.
Because of this, some Christians sometimes quip that “Christianity is not a religion; it’s a fellowship.” In the broad definition of religion, this accurately applies to following Jesus. Believers should understand how behaviors and attitudes should flow both from and toward the Person of Jesus Christ and as for Christianity . . . it is basically different from every other “religion” in the world because of Christ. Born again Christians should stand up for Jesus today more than ever!
Born again Christians should stand up for Jesus today more than ever!
BEWARE!!! A new religion has infiltrated the hearts and minds of not only American culture but of America’s churches. What was once simply a characteristic of human nature running directly opposite to the central distinctive marks of a disciple of Christ Jesus has now been formed into a religion that has outgrown and undermined TRUE Christianity. https://www.godcannotlie.org/true_children_of_god.htm
