Fastest Growing Religions in the World
What is a ‘religion’? Religion is a set of planned beliefs, practices, and systems that state the belief and worship of a governing force, such as a personal god or some supernatural being.
Religion often involves social beliefs, worldviews, doctrines, prophecies, revelations and moralities that have spiritual meaning to members of the specific faith, which can include many different practices, including feasts, holy places, meditation, sermons, rites and rituals, prayer, symbols and trances.
Since about 80 percent of the world pledges itself to some “religion”; we would think that religion would have a clear meaning. But, there really is no totally accepted definition of religion. Religions take different roads to behavior, truth, Scripture and reason.
Examples of ‘religion’ are Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Sikhism. These ‘religions’ all come with all their own structures . . . over which many deeply disagree.
Some religions focus on behavior and stress actions or attitudes . . . rituals, prayers, behaviors, or confessions of doctrinal belief . . . simply meaning “rules and rituals.” Anyone who prays often and attends church regularly would be considered as “practicing religion” while on the other hand, someone who never prays, never attends church would be considered to be “non-practicing,” even if he professed that faith.
SO, what is the definition of religion?
Some answers are:
A strong belief in a supernatural power or powers that control human destiny.
An institution to express belief in a divine power.
A belief concerning the supernatural, sacred or divine, and the practices and organizations associated with such belief.
A set of attitudes, beliefs, and practices pertaining to supernatural power.
Religion is humanity’s relationship with the Universe.
Dictionaries define religion as any specific system of belief, worship, or conduct that prescribes certain responses to the existence (or non-existence) and character of God.
A problem arises when the definition includes a deity or superhuman power. For instance, atheism is called a religion but denies any power other than man. Atheists and agnostics believe that there is or is not a God and ethics do not necessarily matter. So, are they a religion?
Christians do not explain Christianity as a religion but as an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ. It is the only religion that you do not have to work to be saved, for it is only to be had by the freely given grace of God.
Native Americans believe their spiritual beliefs are a necessary part of their existence and cannot be separated from their life experience.
New Age is sometimes called a religion, but in reality, they embrace whatever appeals to them the most and add them to an existing religious order.
