Lusting
After Riches
1 Tim. 6:9-10 But
they that will be rich fall into temptation and
a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts,
which drown men in destruction and perdition.
[10] For the love of money is the root of all
evil: which while some coveted after, they have
erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through
with many sorrows. [KJV] People who yearn,
and actually lust, for riches fall into temptation
and are trapped by many foolish and harmful desires
that plunge them into ruin and destruction. For
the LOVE of money is the source of all kinds of
evil. Some people, craving money, have been so
eager to have it that they have strayed away from
the faith and have broken their hearts with many
sorrows. Some people are so hungry for money,
more and more and more; it is like a disease with
them. They can never spend what they have, yet
they lust after more. "Perdition"
is utter ruin, damnation, eternal punishment, it is eternal agony in an everlasting Hell. It the loss of eternal life (John 17:12; Php.1:28;
2 Thes.2:3; Heb.10:39; 2 Pet.3:7; Rev.17:8). Perdition
is eternal separation from God (2 Thes.1:8-9).
We should
be happy with what the Lord gives us. 1 Tim. 6:7-8 For we brought nothing
into this world, and it is certain we can carry
nothing out. [8] And having food and raiment let
us be therewith content. [KJV] When we came
into this world, we didn’t bring anything with us, and it is certain we will NOT carry anything
with us when we die. We should be content if we
have enough food and clothing, and a roof over
our heads.
Luke 12:19-21And
I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods
laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat,
drink, and be merry. [20] But God said unto him,
Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required
of thee: then whose shall those things be, which
thou hast provided? [21] So is he that layeth
up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward
God. [KJV] . . . The rich man in Jesus’
story died before he could ever begin to use what
he had stored in his big barns. Planning for retirement,
or preparing for life before death, is wise, but neglecting life after death is disastrous.
If you are accumulating wealth only to enrich
yourself, with no concern for helping others around
you, you will enter eternity empty-handed and
most likely go to the destination where you do
not wish to go. Jesus challenges us to think beyond
earthbound goals and to use what we have been
given to improve and strengthen God’s Kingdom. Faith, service and obedience are the way to become
rich toward God, not lusting after money.
Matthew 6:19-21 Lay not up for yourselves
treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth
corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: [20] But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven,
where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and
where thieves do not break through nor steal: [21] For where your treasure is, there will your
heart be also. [KJV] . . . Thinking about
this world and what is in it is a common and fatal
symptom of hypocrisy. There is no other sin where
Satan can have a more certain and faster hold
on your soul than lusting after riches. Christ
Jesus counsels us to make our most sought after
things in life the joys and glories of the other world; things which are not seen, which are spiritual,
which are eternal, and to place our happiness
in them. What are "treasures
in Heaven?" It is our salvation,
wisdom, knowledge, the fear of God, the knowledge
of God, the Gospel, the Kingdom (Pro.8:18; 10:22;
21:20; 23:23; Is.33:6; 55:1; Eph.3:8; Col.2:3;
1 Cor.1:5; 2 Cor.4:6-7; 6:10; Heb.11:26; Jam.2:5).
Treasures are also the good deeds we do for others
that go ahead and await our arrival.
Matthew 19:21 Jesus
said unto him, If
thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast,
and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure
in heaven: and come and follow me. [KJV] . . . Should all believers sell everything they
own? No, absolutely not. We are responsible to
take care for our own needs and the needs of our
families so we won’t be a burden on others. The
Bible makes this perfectly clear. No able-bodied
person should be on welfare, depending on the
government to support them.
2 Thes. 3:10 For
even when we were with you, this we commanded
you, that if any would not work, neither should
he eat. [KJV]
We should,
however, be willing to give up anything IF God
asks us to do so. To have this kind
of attitude allows nothing to come between us
and God and keeps us from using our God-given
wealth selfishly. IF you are comforted by the
fact that Christ did not tell all His followers
to sell all their possessions, then maybe you
are too attached to what you have.
Our wisdom should allow us to give
all diligence to make eternal life sure through
Jesus Christ, and to look on all things here below,
not as worthy to be compared with it, and to be
content with nothing short of it. Heaven will
be happiness above and beyond anything here on
Earth, an inheritance incorruptible to which we
can look forward. The worldly man is wrong in
his first belief; therefore all his reasonings
and actions are wrong. A person can only serve
one master. God requires (demands) our whole heart,
and will not share it with the world. When two
masters oppose each other, no one can serve them
both. If someone holds to the world and loves
it, he must despise God; but he who loves God,
must give up the friendship of the world.
