ISRAEL'S IDOLATRY

Israel commits idolatry with the people of Moab.

Numbers 25:1-5 And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab. [2] And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods: and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods. [3] And Israel joined himself unto Baal-peor: and the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel. [4] And the Lord said unto Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up before the Lord against the sun, that the fierce anger of the Lord may be turned away from Israel. [5] And Moses said unto the judges of Israel, Slay ye every one his men that were joined unto Baal-peor. (KJV) The Bible doesn’t say how the Israelite men got involved in sexual immorality.

"Sacred prostitution" was common among Canaanite religions. At first, it was just immoral sex; but soon they were involved in idol worship. Before long they were in over their heads, absorbed into the practices of the pagan culture. Their desire for fun and pleasure caused them to forget their spiritual commitment and their moral standards. It sounds just like people in today’s world! People relax their standards, compromise their morals in order to justify their desires. This combination of sexual sin and idolatry was Balaam’s idea (Num.31:16; Rev. 2:14), the same Balaam who had just blessed Israel and who appeared to be on their side. It is easy to see how the Israelites were misled, for Balaam seemed to say and do all the right things - - - much like preachers and teachers today. Not until Balaam had inflicted great damage on them did Israel realize that he was greedy, used sorcery, and was deeply involved in pagan religious practices. We must be extremely careful to weigh both the words and the deeds of those who claim to offer spiritual help. Baal was the most popular god in Canaan, the land Israel was about to enter. This "god" was represented by a bull, symbol of strength and fertility. He was the god of the rains and harvest. The Israelites were continually attracted to Baal worship, in which prostitution played a large part, throughout their years in Canaan. Because Baal was so popular, his name was often used as a generic title for all the local gods.

Visited by a plague in consequence; twenty-four thousand die.

Numbers 25:6-15 And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. [7] And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from among the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand; [8] And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel. [9] And those that died in the plague were twenty and four thousand. [10] And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, [11] Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, while he was zealous for my sake among them, that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy. [12] Wherefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace: [13] And he shall have it, and his seed after him, even the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was zealous for his God, and made an atonement for the children of Israel. [14] Now the name of the Israelite that was slain, even that was slain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a chief house among the Simeonites. [15] And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was head over a people, and of a chief house in Midian. (KJV)

Numbers 26:1 And it came to pass after the plague, that the Lord spake unto Moses and unto Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, saying, All who were numbered at Sinai perished in the wilderness except Caleb and Joshua. (KJV)

Numbers 26:65 For the Lord had said of them, They shall surely die in the wilderness. And there was not left a man of them, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun. (KJV)

Deut. 2:14-16 And the space in which we came from Kadesh-barnea, until we were come over the brook Zered, was thirty and eight years; until all the generation of the men of war were wasted out from among the host, as the Lord sware unto them. [15] For indeed the hand of the Lord was against them, to destroy them from among the host, until they were consumed. [16] So it came to pass, when all the men of war were consumed and dead from among the people, (KJV)

Religious fidelity during the life of Joshua.

Joshua 24:31 And Israel served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that overlived Joshua, and which had known all the works of the Lord, that he had done for Israel.(KJV)

Judges 2:7 And the people served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the Lord, that he did for Israel. (KJV)

No godly rulers today, so this is not so in today’s ungodly world!

Israel’ Lack of Reverence

Leviticus 26:17 And I will set my face against you, and ye shall be slain before your enemies: they that hate you shall reign over you; and ye shall flee when none pursueth you. (KJV) This is a picture of Israel today! Two things brought ruin to Israel: #1. Contempt, scorn of God’s commandments. and #2. A contempt of His corrections. If Israel would not learn obedience by the things they sufferer, God Himself would be against them. This this is why this nation has all their misery. The whole creation seems to be at war with them. God’s painful judgments would be sent against them. The threatenings here were prophecies, for He foresaw all their rebellions.

TEMPORAL judgments are threatened. Anyone who will not be parted from their sins by the commands of God, shall be parted from them by His judgments.

SPIRITUAL judgments are threatened. Anyone who finds no acceptance of God, shall still stand before His Great White Throne one day (even if they refuse to believe it). God will NOT force His ways on anyone. He will let sinners continue on in their sin, but IF they do not change their minds, Hell awaits!

Isaiah 5:20 Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! (KJV)

In Isaiah 5:8-25, God condemns six sins:

  • (1) exploiting others (Isaiah 5:8-10);
  • (2) drunkenness (Isaiah 5:11-12);
  • (3) taking sarcastic pride in sin (Isaiah 5:18-19);
  • (4) confusing moral standards (Isaiah 5:20);
  • (5) being conceited, overconfident (Isaiah 5:21);
  • (6) perverting justice (Isaiah 5:22-24).

Because of these sins, God punished Israel with destruction by Assyria (Isaiah 5:25-30).

What about the USA?

  • #1 All the crooked business men and politicians taking advantage of others to make a dollar. the rich get richer, the poor get poorer.
  • #2 Happy hour is 24/7 for many people!
  • #3 People could care less what God says about sin. They seem proud of their evils. And blasphemy is rampant.
  • #4 Moral standards keep deteriorating. What was an absolute horror to people 50 years ago is considered A-OK today (extramarital sex, homosexuality, abortion, drugs, drunkenness, etc.)
  • #5 Many are arrogant and overconfident (Pro.3:7; Rom.11:25; 12:16).
  • #6 People confuse good and evil. They prefer their own conclusions to Divine revelations; their own desires to the counsels and commands of God. They profit from their sins, so they continue on in them, making their stack higher and higher. What about corrupt judges, perverting justice? Sin is like lies - - - Every one needs another to conceal it. A viscious cycle!

Romans 11:22 Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off. (KJV)

Paul is speaking to Gentile Christians, and warns them not to feel better because God chose them and rejected some Jews. Because of the Jews’ unbelief, Gentile believers have been grafted into the tree like a wild olive shoot. Both Jews and Gentiles share the tree’s nourishment based on faith in God; neither can rest on heritage or culture for salvation.

Galatians 3:26-29 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. [27] For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. [28] There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. [29] And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise. (KJV)

2 Thes. 2:10-12 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. [11] And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: [12] That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness. (KJV)

There shall come a man of lawlessness (the Antichrist) with power and miracles, and will deceive all those who have refused to believe God’s Truth. God gives people freedom to turn their backs on Him. He allows them to believe Satan’s lies. BUT, if anyone says no to the Truth, they will absolutely experience the consequences of their sin. Judgment awaits every single person who has ever lived! Are you ready?

Jude 1:5 I will therefore put you in remembrance, though ye once knew this, how that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed them that believed not. (KJV)

People should remember how God brought the people out of the land of Egypt, yet afterwards He destroyed all them that refused to believe Him.
