What is Total Depravity?
Calvinism teaches that man is totally depraved, and unable to receive salvation. The Calvinist believes that man has NO freedom in his coming to Christ and receiving salvation. They teach that God's sovereignty, elected and decreed certain people to salvation in time past. They teach that Christ's death was not for all people, but only for the elect. God then extended "irresistible" grace to those He elected. Calvinists believe man has nothing to do with receiving salvation because God chose to save him and caused him to believe.
To me, Calvinism is wrong. That God chose to save some and chose not to save others, contradicts the Biblical teaching that Jesus Christ died and paid the sin debt of ALL men (1 John 2:2); and that God ". . . will have all men to be saved" (1 Tim. 2:4); and that God's nature is to love, and to seek the best for all men (1 John 4:7-8, 16).
Consider the following:
- 1. Man did not lose his conscience. After the fall in the Garden, he hid from God. WHY? Because his conscience told him that he was guilty of disobeying God. When a thief steals from someone, the first thing he does is to run and hide from authorities, because he has a guilty conscience.
- 2. The unregenerate can perform outward good works. Many unbelievers perform outward good works. But, none are done to the glory of God.
God did not make us like robots, but gave us a free will. All people have a free will. The unregenerated sinner has a free will and his free will is a slave to sin. He will always exercise his will to please his only his carnal nature, never anything to benefit God. The sinner has no life in Gods sight. He is condemned.
John 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. (KJV)
John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him. (KJV)
John 8:24 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins. (KJV)
Unregenerated sinners are spiritually dead. Sin affects our heart, mind and soul. The spiritually dead person will not choose God, for he is spiritually dead and the dead will not respond or understand. They have no power to do good works to please God, and nothing they do is acceptable to God. Without the grace of God by Christ they are lost, condemned to an eternal Hell. The fallen sinner is dead in sin, and must be born again. Only the call of God can make the fallen man alive.
Whoa! you say, that is predestination. No, it is not. Let me give you an example, my own stubbornness. For years I felt the gentle knocking at my heart's door (Rev.3:20-21). I felt it, I heard it, but I did nothing! My stubborn free will said no, and for way too long I stayed the devil's child (1 John 3:10). God will never force us to do anything against our will. So, He let me alone in my sin. What was it that finally woke me up? An elderly Sunday School teacher. Something he must have said must have hit home. From that day, the Lord changed me, from the inside out. I do not believe in the Calvinism or Arminian doctrines. I believe GOD! I trust Christ who has saved me.
Because of the fall, the sinner is spiritually dead (Eph. 2:5), blind (2 Cor. 4:4), and deaf to the things of God (Isa. 29:18); and his heart is deceitful and desperately wicked. (Jer 17:9). He has a free will, but he uses this will to choose evil, not good.
2 Thes. 3:2 And that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men: for all men have not faith. (KJV) . . . It takes the Holy Spirit's prodding to bring a sinner to Christ, and it takes regeneration by the Spirit to make the sinner spiritually alive. It is this process that gives us a new nature.
Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. (KJV) . . . It is God's grace and our faith (trusting and believing) that gives us salvation (eternal life). And once we become a child of God, that faith is replenished daily by the Holy Spirit within us. Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. (KJV)
Adam was created with a free will to choose to obey God OR disobey God. He chose to disobey! The free will of Adam and Eve was passed down to ALL who followed them.
Ephesians 2:1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; (KJV) . . . Without the gracious Presence of God's Spirit in our soul, we are unable to think or do what is right. We have a free will, but we always choose evil instead of good. Sin is the death of the soul (Isa.9:2; John 5:25). We are spiritually "dead" (1 Tim.5:6). We are alienated from eternal life with God in His Home (Eph.4:18).
Romans 5:6 For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. (KJV) . . . It was NOT for those who were in some way godly, or tried in some way to do God's will, that Christ died. He died for sinners, ungodly people, you and me! It is by our faith in His death and resurrection that anyone is made godly.
He died for the sins of the world! ALL sinners!
John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. (KJV)
John 16:8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: (KJV)
Romans 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. (KJV)
Galatians 1:4 Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father: (KJV)
Hebrews 9:26 For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. (KJV)
Calvinism is WRONG! The Calvinistic view of Total Inability or Total Depravity is a damnable heresy! Believe God, NOT man-made doctrines!
Matthew 15:9 But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. (KJV)
