What are some ways to achieve victory over sin?
The best way to have victory over sin is to avoid temptation to start with. You must always consider the weak area in your life where you need victory over sin; You must think of the time or condition in which you are or were the weakest.
Is it when you are with a certain person?
Is it a certain establishment (liquor, immorality)?
Is it after a certain experience?
Is it connected to a particular place?
Proverbs 22:3 A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished. (KJV)
Proverbs 27:12 A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself; but the simple pass on, and are punished. (KJV)
Prudent = cautious, careful, sensible. It is always wise IF possible, to avoid the temptation.
Temptation may still come, but by avoiding it as much as possible we take ourselves out of harms way. Far too many times we do not avoid temptations because we secretly enjoy our sin. We must be honest with ourselves and take responsibility. We must plan to avoid temptation as much as possible.
Another way to deal with temptation and have victory over sin is to flee. RUN! Do NOT hesitate. Get out of there.
Genesis 39:12-13 And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out. 13 And it came to pass, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and was fled forth, (KJV)
There may be times we simply cannot avoid temptation. Godly Joseph was well aware of the desires of his master's wife . . . but he was a slave and could not just get up and leave. When he first found out about her interest he tried to talk her out of it. It did NOT work. She laid a trap for him. As soon as he saw his position, he did not try to argue with her, he simply RAN. He then had to spend years in jail falsely accused of rape, but he knew he had kept his honor before God. There may be times when we do the right thing, but the results are far from pleasant. God knew, and Joseph knew that he had NOT done wrong. That is what counts! The Bible has only one instruction on sexual temptation . . . RUN away, NEVER fight or argue. You will lose!
God is ALWAYS faithful. He will always provide a way out . . . if we are willing to take it. Sometimes we are too proud to take it. Sometimes we are afraid of appearing rude or losing friends. Don't let these or other considerations stop you. Victory over sin is your priority.
1 Cor. 10:14Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry. (KJV)
1 Cor. 6:18 Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body. (KJV)
1 Tim. 6:11 But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. (KJV)
2 Timothy 2:22 Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart. (KJV)
The devil wants us to think that running from temptation is the coward's way out. Do NOT believe him! Quite often it is God's way out, and if we are too proud to take it, we will fall.
There shall be times when we can neither avoid temptation nor run away from it. This is what Jesus faced in the wilderness (Mat.4). He was directly tempted by the devil. There was NO possibility to avoid the temptation or to run away from it. Do you see how Jesus responded to each temptation? We need to pay attention to what He did! He responded with total FAITH in the Word of God. He did not argue. He did not try to "present His case," and He did not have an overconfident attitude. He kept His answers short and quoted only the Word of God.
He also recognized when the Word of God was being used out of context. We must KNOW what the Word states, so that we too can do this! We must READ the Word! We must STUDY the Word! We must pray and meditate on the Word!
James 4:6-7 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. 7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. (KJV)
You are never truly defeated until YOU give up.
