Struggling with the Definition of Sin

Sin is ANY deliberate action, attitude, or thought that goes against Almighty God. Do you think of sin as an noticeable act, such as murder, adultery or theft. YES! Those ARE sins! But sin is also ANY wrongdoing that's far more indirect and even unnoticeable at times. God tells us that arrogance, covetousness, envy, pride and even worry are sins! Sin includes BOTH things you should NOT do, but have done (sins of commission) and things you should have done, but did not do (sins of omission).

The Bible is very outspoken about the hearts of all people.

Psalm 14:1-3 The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good. 2  The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God. 3  They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one. (KJV)
Psalm 28:3 Draw me not away with the wicked, and with the workers of iniquity, which speak peace to their neighbours, but mischief is in their hearts. (KJV)
Psalm 53:1 The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Corrupt are they, and have done abominable iniquity: there is none that doeth good. (KJV)
Psalm 58:2 Yea, in heart ye work wickedness; ye weigh the violence of your hands in the earth. (KJV)
Ecc. 9:3 This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun, that there is one event unto all: yea, also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead. (KJV)
Isaiah 29:13 Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men: (KJV)

Jeremiah 7:24 But they hearkened not, nor inclined their ear, but walked in the counsels and in the imagination of their evil heart, and went backward, and not forward. (KJV)
Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? (KJV)
Jeremiah 18:12 And they said, There is no hope: but we will walk after our own devices, and we will every one do the imagination of his evil heart. (KJV)
Matthew 12:35 A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. (KJV)
Matthew 15:8 This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. (KJV)
Matthew 15:18 But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. (KJV)
Mark 7:21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, (KJV)
Ephesians 4:18 Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: (KJV)
Hebrews 3:12 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. (KJV)
2 Peter 2:14  Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children: (KJV)
Romans 3:10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: (KJV)
Psalm 53:3  Every one of them is gone back: they are altogether become filthy; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. (KJV)
Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; (KJV)

The Bible is optimistic and hopeful when it comes to talking about God and His plans, but it repeatedly states BAD news when it comes to the human heart. This bad news shows up in two ways in people's lives. Although people can commit thousands of specific sins, you can generally lump them all into one of two groups: sins of impulse and sins of the heart.

Sins of impulse are often what come to mind when you think about sin.
#1. I see something; #2. I want it; #3. So I take it.

The impulsive desire to own, control or destroy is what leads to adultery, murder, theft, addictions or excessive anger or rage. Impulsive sins are usually brought on by emotion, and when you allow it, emotions can control you and take you on an absolutely ridiculous trip, where you do NOT want to go.

Impulsive sins are often thought to be the worst kind of sins, but a second kind of sin, although much more subtle (elusive, indirect, understated), is more deadly. These are the sins of the heart . . . or spiritual sins. Spiritual sins are the sins that do not show up on the outside of a person (such as an obvious action, like murder or theft). These sins harbor themselves deep within the heart. Bitterness, covetousness, envy, greed, hatred, hypocrisy, impatience, jealousy, lying, pride, a quick temper, resentment, selfishness, deceit, etc. . . . all these sins can be concealed on the outside, but my friend, they carve a deep jagged hole into a person’s soul, and the longer they are allowed to live inside of a person, the deeper that hole gets! I think all TRUE Christians have had these sins in their lives . . . I know that I have. It is a blessing indeed when you get rid of them! Thank You Jesus!
