How can I overcome sin?
1 John 2:13 I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father. (KJV)
John writes to the “fathers” complimenting them on their faith and long standing relationship with Jesus, who is from the “beginning” (who has always been). John writes to the “young men” who have been tempted by Satan, and won! John writes to the “little children” who had just recently learned about Jesus and was about to embark on their spiritual journey. In each and every stage of Christian life, God’s Word is crucial and relevant. The “little ones” grow in their ability to win out over temptation, and learn what kind of life God wants them to live. “Young adults” continue to grow in their relationship with Christ and their brothers and sisters in Christ, while winning spiritual battles as they go. The “fathers” who have known Christ for years develop knowledge and wisdom to guide, teach, encourage and admonish the younger ones in their spiritual life. And I believe that all stages of believers increase in faith.
1 John 2:14 I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one. (KJV)
John reminds us again that Jesus was, and is, and is to come (Rev.1:4,8; 4:8). He has always been, and always will be. Knowing Jesus, and the power of His resurrection, and just how much Jesus suffered for us, and that one day we will be granted entrance to His Presence; this is spiritual maturity!
As John again addresses the “young men,” he gives the secret for their strength: “The Word of God lives in you.” We (you and me), CANNOT overcome the “wicked one” (the devil, Satan) on our own power. NO way! We would fail miserably! Satan is extremely powerful (John 14:30; Ep.2:2). We can be victorious only through Jesus and His Holy Spirit who abides within us (Jn.14:17; Rom.8:9).
1 John 5:4-5 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. 5 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God? (KJV)
Every TRUE child of God is able to overcome (defeat, have victory) over the world (evil effects caused by Satan) . . . and it is our FAITH that wins the battle for us. If you are a child of God, you have overcome the world! Jesus has given you that victory! HOW? . . . By your faith! The Bible does not say how much faith. It just tells us that we must have faith. Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. (KJV) . . . God wants us to believe what He tells us. He wants us to trust (have confidence in) Him. That is FAITH! I do not think that this is too much for God to ask of us. There is NO way that we can overcome the world by our power. Jesus won the ultimate victory when He died on the Cross. When we believe God and have faith, we share Christ’s victory! . . . 1 John 5:5 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God? [KJV]
WHO can defeat the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God. Verse 5 is simply restating verse 4 in question form. The only one who can conquer the evil world is the one who BELIEVES Jesus is Who He says He is! By our faith, His victory is ours! Complete trust in Christ gives us access to God’s power. That power grants to us in the future, eternal life. But for now, it gives us victory over evil and sin. Sin no longer has control over us. We are now dead to sin and alive to God, through Jesus Christ our Lord (Rom.6:11-14).
The Bible is a Resource that we far too often treat too lightly. We symbolize service to it by carrying our Bibles to church or reading a daily devotional or a chapter a day, but we fail to take it to heart, meditate on it or apply its wisdom to our lives. We FAIL to confess the sins it reveals. We FAIL to praise God for the gifts and blessings it reveals to us. We either take in just enough to keep us alive spiritually by eating from the Word . . . BUT we never digest enough to be healthy, prospering Christians. We may come to feed often but we FAIL because we never meditate on it long enough to get spiritual nutrition from it.
