Victory Over Sin Must be our Earnest Desire
Having victory over sin must be the earnest desire of TRUE Christians. It must be our earnest desire to live lives that are pleasing to our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. IF we have no desire to live holy lives, then we need to consider: are we really saved? Salvation includes a new nature which desires to please God and sorrows at sin. http://www.godcannotlie.org/true_children_of_god.htm
All TRUE children of God start out with good desires and great goals, but all too often old sinful habits and cravings rise up and we stumble and fall. The old devil is NOT omniscient (all-knowing) like our awesome Triune God, but he does know where we are weak! We know what we SHOULD do, but SO often, when Satan lures us, we give in to sin instead of standing firm in our stand with Jesus.
Our Sin Nature
Just WHAT is sin? Is it simply doing bad things? If we really want to know the truth about sin we must go way back to the source. Sin came into the world through the disobedience of Adam. His sin was much more than simply taking a bite of a forbidden fruit. His sin was a bold, defiant act of rebellion against the loving God Who created him. It was betrayal and disloyalty by the creation, against the Creator of the Earth. Ever since that time in the Garden (Gen.2), ALL of mankind has been in defiant rebellion against God. EVERY SIN . . . no matter how "small" WE think it is, is an inexcusable declaration of independence from God. It really and truly is just like we are cursing the Lord Jesus Christ and spitting in His glorious Face!
EVERY human being is born with a sin nature (Ecc. 7:20; Jer.17:9; Rom.3:10, 23). We go against God from the day we are born (Ps.51:5; 58:3). We have no thought of turning TO God unless it is to try to sinfully use Him to gain some selfish benefit. Most people see Him as their hostile enemy. How they express this may be in a wide open way or done in secret, but the feeling is there. If you think you have never felt that way about God, you deceive no one but yourself! Every time any of us deliberately and willfully sin, we are making a bold statement of our defiant and disobedient rebellion against the Almighty God of the Universe!
Is there a difference between sin and sinning?
Before God saves us, sin is our nature. It is who we are. We commit sins because we are sinners. The big problem is not that we commit sin, but that sin has totally corrupted us. After God saves us, sin is no longer our nature. We have been given a new nature, we become a new man (2 Cor.3:17; Eph.4:24; Col.3:10). Now when we commit a sin we blaspheme and profane our new nature. It is no longer who we are. Sin is like a rampant cancer eating us up from the inside. AFTER we are saved, sin is like a disease attacking our body from the outside. It still must be dealt with to have a healthy body, but it is now an external enemy where before we were saved, it was an internal enemy.
BEFORE we were saved, we were sinners, sin was our natural state. We either openly or secretly hated God and that is what we wanted. BUT . . . when God, in love and mercy, softened our hardened hearts, and gave us a new nature . . . NOW we want to please God in all that we do! This is why only those chosen by God can be saved.
Matthew 22:14 For many are called, but few are chosen. (KJV) . . . Our blessed Saviour often uses this proverbial expression, as a warning. The Jews had been called, but few of them had been chosen to life. The biggest part of the nation was wicked, and the biggest part of them refused the invitation sent out to them by God . . . which showed by their lives that they were not chosen to salvation. The Gentiles also were invited to be saved. Nation after nation has been called; but few, only a few have yet showed that they are TRUE Christians, the elect of God. It is also true, that many who are in the church shall one day prove to be without the wedding garment, and show at last that they were not the chosen of God. Many are called: (Mat.7:13-14; 18:2-3; 20:16; 22:14; 25:41,46; Lk.13:23-24; 14:33; 21:36; Jn.7:34; 8:21; 10:9; 14:6).

Sin Nature Defeated
The first thing to realize is that all things begin and end with the Almighty God of the Universe!
Revelation 12:11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death. (KJV) . . . It is ONLY the precious Blood of Jesus (1 Pet.1:18-19) that takes care of the sin nature. We are so badly infected with the disease of sin, that death is the only way out. The world can offer absolutely NO healing whatsoever for the sin nature. That is why the apostle Paul tells us we died with Christ that we might rise to new life in Him (Rom. 6). When we come to Jesus as Saviour and Lord, our sin nature is crucified with Christ on the cross. We are then resurrected to a new life with a new nature. There is no other way to get rid of the corruption of sin.
As TRUE Christians, sin is no longer who we are. BUT . . . when we were saved we carried over many of the evil thought patterns and actions of the old nature (Rom.7:14-25). Jesus Christ is our only Way out. For the unbeliever, NO victory over sin is ever possible without Jesus Christ!
