Bible’s Definition of SIN
Sin is a mysterious reality and fact, that evades definition and understanding. Most people often think of sin as wrongdoing or transgression of God's Law. Sin also includes a failure to do what is right.
Sin also offends people in its violence and hatred toward other people, and its rebellion against God. The Bible teaches that sin involves a condition where the heart is corrupted and bent on doing evil. The idea of sin is difficult, and the language varied, so that it might be best to look at the reality of sin in the Old Testament first, then reflect spiritually. Sin is tragic because it represents a fall from the high original status of humankind.
Definition of Sin . . . What does the Bible say?
A definition of sin is doing what is what you know to be wrong . . . OR . . . not doing what you know is right and you do not do it.
James 4:17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin. (KJV)
1 John 3:4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. (KJV)
Isaiah 59:2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear. (KJV)
When God says "Do not lie" and you lie, you have sinned. If God says "Do not steal" and you steal, you have sinned. And according to God, sin separates you from Him.
The Bible says: Romans 1:18-22 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; 19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. 20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, (KJV)
God has a moral law and has given all people a conscience. The conscience acts to accuse OR excuse us. It compels us to remain within the bounds of God's moral standards of conduct. IF we choose to reject what our conscience tells us, we sin! Our conscience is sort of like a human muscle, it remains strong if we exercise it, but it shrivels up to nothing when we do not use it. Although morality (goodness, decency) still does exist, the vast majority no longer feel constrained by it. And my friend, after continually ignoring the urging of the conscience . . . it no longer works as it should. BEWARE!!!
