Salvation, Christian Growth

Just what does it take to grow and become spiritually mature? Why do some Christians not grow as they should? God's Word gives us steps we can take toward growth and spiritual maturity, IF we would be diligent in reading the Bible and patiently and diligently practice what we learn.

People understand the idea of growth in the physical development of humans, and we know why it is important. Babies are immature, both physically and mentally, but we expect them to develop. If they do not, there is a problem. Spiritual growth is a similar idea but is far more important.
Growth is development or improvement toward a goal called "maturity" or, in the Bible it is called "perfection". When one is "born again" as a child of God, he is spiritually immature, a babe in Christ. As time passes, he SHOULD develop the qualities or abilities which the Bible says characterize the mature Christian (a father 1 Jn.2:13-14).

Many Scriptures describe the need to grow and mature spiritually:
Ephesians 4:14-15  That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; 15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: (KJV)
2 Peter 3:18  But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen. (KJV)
2 Thes.1:3 We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth; (KJV)
Phil. 1:9 And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment; (KJV)
Colossians 1:10 That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God; (KJV)
1 Thes. 3:12 And the Lord make you to increase and abound in love one toward another, and toward all men, even as we do toward you: (KJV)
1 Thes. 4:10 And indeed ye do it toward all the brethren which are in all Macedonia: but we beseech you, brethren, that ye increase more and more; (KJV)
Hebrews 6:1 Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, (KJV)
2 Peter 1:5-9 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; 6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; 7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. 8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. (KJV)

Many different problems arise when God’s children fail to grow: some go back to the world, others cause conflict and strife because of their ignorance, some become a stumblingblock (Rom.11:9; 1:13; 1 Cor.1:23; 8:9) because of irregular attendance, worldliness or indifference.

Just as a baby does certain things to grow physically, so too, baby Christians must have certain things to grow spiritually. Each and every Christian should continue to grow spiritually, until the day the Lord calls them Home!
