Divine Curse of God

Genesis 3:14 And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: (KJV)

Because God is Holy and pure, He responds only in a way that is consistent with His perfect moral nature. He could not then and cannot now, allow sin to go unchecked. He must punish sin. When Satan (the serpent) sinned, he was punished. When Adam and Eve sinned, they were punished. When Israel sinned, they were punished. And when we sin, we SHALL BE punished. Every human being ever born, with the exception of Jesus, has inherited the sinful nature of Adam and Eve (Romans 5:12-21). Adam and Eve’s punishment shows us how seriously God looks at sin of any kind. Adam and Eve learned the hard way that because God is holy and hates sin, and that He must punish sinners. The rest of the book of Genesis describes stories of lives ruined as a result of the fall. Disobedience is sin, and too, it breaks our fellowship, our relationship with God. But praise God! When we disobey, God is willing to forgive us (1 John 1:9) and to restore our relationship with Him through His Son, Jesus (Rom.5:1-10).

Deut. 11:28 And a curse, if ye will not obey the commandments of the Lord your God, but turn aside out of the way which I command you this day, to go after other gods, which ye have not known. (KJV)

All the arguments for obedience to God can be summed up in two words; blessing and curse. Moses told the Israelites to choose which one they wanted. It is the same with us today. We, like the Israelites, have broken God’s Law, and are under its curse, and there is NO way we can correct this from within ourselves. In mercy, the Gospel too sets before us the same: blessing and a curse. A blessing, if we obey the call to repentance, to faith in Christ, and newness of heart and life through Him; BUT an awful curse, if we neglect so great salvation (Heb.2:3). Let us thankfully and joyfully welcome these good tidings of great joy (Luke 2:10); and let us not harden our hearts, but hear the voice of God while it is called to-day (Heb.3:8,15; 4:7), and while He still invites us to come to Him. Let us be diligent to make our calling and election sure (2 Pet.1:10).

Deut. 29:20 The Lord will not spare him, but then the anger of the Lord and his jealousy shall smoke against that man, and all the curses that are written in this book shall lie upon him, and the Lord shall blot out his name from under heaven. (KJV)

The national covenant made with Israel, not only illustrates the covenant of grace made with true believers, but it also represents the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Those who agree to God’s new covenant of mercy and grace in Jesus Christ, and commit themselves to be His people, should grab hold of every chance to renew their commitment to Him, and realize their responsibility to Him, as the God of our salvation; and we should make every effort to walk accordingly. A sinner is described in the Bible as one whose heart turns away from God, and when this happens, there the damage begins. It is the evil heart of unbelief, which deceives and seduces people to depart from the living God to worthless idols. Satan diligently tries to disguise this truth, but on Judgment Day (if not before), IF you persist on apostasy, the curses of God shall fall upon you. Please BEWARE of the sinner’s security in sin. Millions hear or read the words of the curse, yet they think that they are safe from the wrath of God. God keeps His Promises, both to His children AND to sinners who refuse to believe Him.

Deut. 29:22-28 So that the generation to come of your children that shall rise up after you, and the stranger that shall come from a far land, shall say, when they see the plagues of that land, and the sicknesses which the Lord hath laid upon it; [23] And that the whole land thereof is brimstone, and salt, and burning, that it is not sown, nor beareth, nor any grass groweth therein, like the overthrow of Sodom, and Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboim, which the Lord overthrew in his anger, and in his wrath: [24] Even all nations shall say, Wherefore hath the Lord done thus unto this land? what meaneth the heat of this great anger? [25] Then men shall say, Because they have forsaken the covenant of the Lord God of their fathers, which he made with them when he brought them forth out of the land of Egypt: [26] For they went and served other gods, and worshipped them, gods whom they knew not, and whom he had not given unto them: [27] And the anger of the Lord was kindled against this land, to bring upon it all the curses that are written in this book: [28] And the Lord rooted them out of their land in anger, and in wrath, and in great indignation, and cast them into another land, as it is this day. (KJV)

Idolatry would be the ruin of Israel. But remember this - - - He never does anything without a good reason. We should seek the reason when we feel God’s anger, and repent of our sin, that we may give glory to God. So, in reality, the law of Moses still leaves sinners under the curse today, but the grace of Christ toward penitent, believing sinners, shall be kept by the power of God.

For the "curses"of the Mosiac Law, see: Deut. 27:15-26; 28:15-44; Joshua 8:30-34.

Psalm 119:21 Thou hast rebuked the proud that are cursed, which do err from thy commandments. (KJV)

Many feel irritated under rules, for they think rules restrict them from doing what they want to do, but we actually should rejoice in following God’s rules and consider them great riches. God gave us His rules to free us to be all that He wants us to be (more like His precious Son). They restrict us - - - yes! But they restrict us from doing only what would hinder us and keep us from being our best. God’s rules are there to help us, NOT hurt us! His rules help us follow His path and avoid paths leading to His wrath, and His verdict of Hell.

Proverbs 3:33 The curse of the Lord is in the house of the wicked: but he blesseth the habitation of the just. (KJV)

God’s TRUE children should follow the rules of Christ (Mat.22:37-40), and imitate Him. We should do justice, love mercy, beware of covetousness; be ready for every good work, and avoid needless strife (Micah 6:8; Luke 12:15; Rom.13:13; Galatians 5:19-21) I ask that you read all of Proverbs 3 as well. It is far from wise for TRUE believers to choose any of the ways of the wicked (sinners). The curse . . . of the wicked abides with them forever unless they repent and run to God for forgiveness (1 John 1:9).
