Israel, Defeated in Battle
Leviticus 26:25 And I will bring a sword upon you, that shall avenge the quarrel of my covenant: and when ye are gathered together within your cities, I will send the pestilence among you; and ye shall be delivered into the hand of the enemy. (KJV)
God had set blessings before them - - - which would make them a happy people IF they would be obedient (Deut. 11:26-32). Here, He sets the curse before them, the evils which would make them miserable, IF they were disobedient. Two things would bring ruin. 1. Contempt of God’s commandments. 2. Contempt of His corrections. If they would not obey Him, God Himself would be against them. My friend, God can cause the whole creation to be at war with sinners. Those who will not departed from their sins by the commands of God, shall be parted from them by His judgments. It is right with God to leave people with no hope of pardon, who devote themselves to sin. For it is only because of His free grace, that we are not left to pine away in the iniquity we were born in, and have lived in. God loves us and always gives us a Way out! It is up to us to go the right way!
Deut. 28:15-44 But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee: [16] Cursed shalt thou be in the city, and cursed shalt thou be in the field. [17] Cursed shall be thy basket and thy store. [18] Cursed shall be the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy land, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep. [19] Cursed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and cursed shalt thou be when thou goest out. [20] The Lord shall send upon thee cursing, vexation, and rebuke, in all that thou settest thine hand unto for to do, until thou be destroyed, and until thou perish quickly; because of the wickedness of thy doings, whereby thou hast forsaken me. [21] The Lord shall make the pestilence cleave unto thee, until he have consumed thee from off the land, whither thou goest to possess it. [22] The Lord shall smite thee with a consumption, and with a fever, and with an inflammation, and with an extreme burning, and with the sword, and with blasting, and with mildew; and they shall pursue thee until thou perish. [23] And thy heaven that is over thy head shall be brass, and the earth that is under thee shall be iron. [24] The Lord shall make the rain of thy land powder and dust: from heaven shall it come down upon thee, until thou be destroyed.
[25] The Lord shall cause thee to be smitten before thine enemies: thou shalt go out one way against them, and flee seven ways before them: and shalt be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth. [26] And thy carcase shall be meat unto all fowls of the air, and unto the beasts of the earth, and no man shall fray them away. [27] The Lord will smite thee with the botch of Egypt, and with the emerods, and with the scab, and with the itch, whereof thou canst not be healed. [28] The Lord shall smite thee with madness, and blindness, and astonishment of heart: [29] And thou shalt grope at noonday, as the blind gropeth in darkness, and thou shalt not prosper in thy ways: and thou shalt be only oppressed and spoiled evermore, and no man shall save thee. [30] Thou shalt betroth a wife, and another man shall lie with her: thou shalt build an house, and thou shalt not dwell therein: thou shalt plant a vineyard, and shalt not gather the grapes thereof. [31] Thine ox shall be slain before thine eyes, and thou shalt not eat thereof: thine ass shall be violently taken away from before thy face, and shall not be restored to thee: thy sheep shall be given unto thine enemies, and thou shalt have none to rescue them. [32] Thy sons and thy daughters shall be given unto another people, and thine eyes shall look, and fail with longing for them all the day long: and there shall be no might in thine hand. [33] The fruit of thy land, and all thy labours, shall a nation which thou knowest not eat up; and thou shalt be only oppressed and crushed alway: [34] So that thou shalt be mad for the sight of thine eyes which thou shalt see. [35] The Lord shall smite thee in the knees, and in the legs, with a sore botch that cannot be healed, from the sole of thy foot unto the top of thy head.
[36] The Lord shall bring thee, and thy king which thou shalt set over thee, unto a nation which neither thou nor thy fathers have known; and there shalt thou serve other gods, wood and stone. [37] And thou shalt become an astonishment, a proverb, and a byword, among all nations whither the Lord shall lead thee. [38] Thou shalt carry much seed out into the field, and shalt gather but little in; for the locust shall consume it. [39] Thou shalt plant vineyards, and dress them, but shalt neither drink of the wine, nor gather the grapes; for the worms shall eat them. [40] Thou shalt have olive trees throughout all thy coasts, but thou shalt not anoint thyself with the oil; for thine olive shall cast his fruit. [41] Thou shalt beget sons and daughters, but thou shalt not enjoy them; for they shall go into captivity. [42] All thy trees and fruit of thy land shall the locust consume. [43] The stranger that is within thee shall get up above thee very high; and thou shalt come down very low. [44] He shall lend to thee, and thou shalt not lend to him: he shall be the head, and thou shalt be the tail. (KJV)
Do you see that this is conditional?
The first of these was prophesied by God to Abraham. “Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years …. But in the fourth generation they shall come hither again … (Gen. 15:13, 16). They went down into Egypt for 430 years; then God brought them out of Egypt. That is what we are following now in Deuteronomy. They are on the east bank of the Jordan River, and God is bringing them back to the land for the first regathering. In the Book of Joshua, we will find them entering into the land, and in the Book of Judges we will find them settled in the land, which is a complete and literal fulfillment.
Now, before they have even entered the land, the second time they are to be put out of the land is mentioned here. This is a very remarkable chapter.
Deut. 28:32–34 Thy sons and thy daughters shall be given unto another people, and thine eyes shall look, and fail with longing for them all the day long: and there shall be no might in thine hand.
[33] The fruit of thy land, and all thy labours, shall a nation which thou knowest not eat up; and thou shalt be only oppressed and crushed alway:
[34] So that thou shalt be mad for the sight of thine eyes which thou shalt see. (KJV)
This Passage was precisely fulfilled in Judah’s last king, Zedekiah, whose sons were slain before him; then his eyes were put out. Blind and helpless, he was carried away into Babylonian captivity.
Deut. 28:35-37 The LORD shall smite thee in the knees, and in the legs, with a sore botch that cannot be healed, from the sole of thy foot unto the top of thy head.
(KJV)
This would be the Babylonian Captivity which is now a matter of history. We will see it come to pass in both Kings and Chronicles. Why did all this happen to them? Disobedience. God had given them the “if’s.” God said, “If you obey, you will be blessed. If you disobey, you will be put out of the land.” Israel was regathered from the Babylonian Captivity. Their return to the land is recorded in Ezra and Nehemiah. Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi, tell of their return to the land. This is the second prophecy concerning their return to the land, which has been literally fulfilled.
The third scattering of Israel was the result of being conquered by Rome. This is described prophetically.
Deut. 28:48 Therefore shalt thou serve thine enemies which the LORD shall send against thee, in hunger, and in thirst, and in nakedness, and in want of all things: and he shall put a yoke of iron upon thy neck, until he have destroyed thee. (KJV)
Josephus tells about the coming of the Romans under Titus. Rome, known as the iron kingdom, fulfilled the prediction, “He shall put a yoke of iron upon thy neck.”
Deut.28:49 The LORD shall bring a nation against thee from far, from the end of the earth, as swift as the eagle flieth; a nation whose tongue thou shalt not understand; (KJV)
Rome, spoke a language that was entirely different from Hebrew. God says the conquerors would be “whose tongue thou shalt not understand.”
Deut. 28:50-53 A nation of fierce countenance, which shall not regard the person of the old, nor shew favour to the young:
[51] And he shall eat the fruit of thy cattle, and the fruit of thy land, until thou be destroyed: which also shall not leave thee either corn, wine, or oil, or the increase of thy kine, or flocks of thy sheep, until he have destroyed thee.
[52] And he shall besiege thee in all thy gates, until thy high and fenced walls come down, wherein thou trustedst, throughout all thy land: and he shall besiege thee in all thy gates throughout all thy land, which the LORD thy God hath given thee.
[53] And thou shalt eat the fruit of thine own body, the flesh of thy sons and of thy daughters, which the LORD thy God hath given thee, in the siege, and in the straitness, wherewith thine enemies shall distress thee: (KJV)
Josephus tells how mothers were forced to give up their babies, and the flesh of the babies was eaten. The people died, and their dead bodies collected inside the city. They had to throw them over the wall. This prophecy was literally fulfilled.
The Jewish people are now scattered throughout the world.
Deut.28:64 And the LORD shall scatter thee among all people, from the one end of the earth even unto the other; and there thou shalt serve other gods, which neither thou nor thy fathers have known, even wood and stone. (KJV)
They have never returned from that dispersion. That is yet to be fulfilled. There are three prophecies of being dispossessed. There are three prophecies that they will return. They have returned twice. They have not returned the third time.
So we have six prophecies. Five of them have been literally fulfilled. What do you think about the sixth one? I can tell you what I think about it. I think it will be literally fulfilled. It is yet to come in the future.
Deut.28:65-67 And among these nations shalt thou find no ease, neither shall the sole of thy foot have rest: but the LORD shall give thee there a trembling heart, and failing of eyes, and sorrow of mind:
[66] And thy life shall hang in doubt before thee; and thou shalt fear day and night, and shalt have none assurance of thy life:
[67] In the morning thou shalt say, Would God it were even! and at even thou shalt say, Would God it were morning! for the fear of thine heart wherewith thou shalt fear, and for the sight of thine eyes which thou shalt see. (KJV)
This has literally been fulfilled in the persecutions of the Jews down through the centuries - - - all because of their continued disobedience. They have no rest, and they have a trembling heart. God is always true to His Word! This is a lesson for us.
We should tell the Gospel to these people who are dispossessed from the land. The Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ is for Jew and Gentile alike, and it is for the “obedience to the faith among all nations” (Rom. 1:5).
If people do not obey God, they not only fall short of the blessing promised, but leave themselves wide open for His curse. Curses bring all kinds of misery, just opposite of blessings bringing all kinds of happiness. Notice God’s justice of this curse. God did not curse these people for no reason, or for some light cause. Do you see the extent and power of this curse? IF God curses someone or some nation, He has a good reason! And wherever the sinner goes, the curse of God follows; wherever the sinner is, God’s curse rests upon him. Whatever the person has, is under God’s curse. Any joy the sinner had, is gone; there is no true comfort, for God’s Holy and righteous wrath is mingled with everything the sinner does. Many judgments are here stated, that would become the fruits of the curse; with which God would punish the the Jews, for their apostacy and disobedience. The curse still rests on Israel. Look at their present state. Those who walk by sight and not by faith (2 Cor.5:7), are in great danger in God’s eyes.
I truly do fear for the United States. She started out as a “nation under God” but she has backslidden in apostasy so far that God no longer can bless her. I believe deep down in my heart that she shall fall and that it may be in my day - - - and I’m getting up there in years! She no longer obeys God, and her apathy about the ways of God and His Holy Word are quite frightening to say the least. Living without the benefit of marriage (adultery, fornication) is being practiced even by many so-called “Christians,” and even by the elderly, who should know better. Abortion is rampant, homosexuality is commonplace and is accepted in many (if not most) so-called churches today; and many “churches” even have “gay” pastors. Same sex marriage will probably be a law nationwide very soon. NONE of this, plus much more: covetousness, greed, hatred, robbery, murder, rape, etc., is in obedience to God. ALL will bring down the curse of God upon you. BEWARE!!! The USA could be defeated in battle, just as was Israel!
Isaiah 3:1 For, behold, the Lord, the Lord of hosts, doth take away from Jerusalem and from Judah the stay and the staff, the whole stay of bread, and the whole stay of water, (KJV)
This famine is a judgment of God. There are about a dozen famines mentioned in the Word of God, and every one of them is a judgment from Him upon the nation of Israel.
Isaiah 3:2-3 The mighty man, and the man of war, the judge, and the prophet, and the prudent, and the ancient, [3] The captain of fifty, and the honourable man, and the counsellor, and the cunning artificer, and the eloquent orator. (KJV)
God not only would remove bread and water but all the men of leadership. Qualified men for high positions are lacking, and this is a judgment from God. We have men of war, but we have no great generals. There is lack of leadership in our judicial system. Crime is rampant because we have no great men in the seats of judgment. All we have is a bunch of lying, deceitful politicians who compromise. I think that it is the mark of a deteriorating age and the judgment of God when a nation does not producing great men.
What about TV? Some strung out nut comes out on stage, strums a guitar - - - doesn’t play any actual music - - - just yells at the top of his voice. People think he’s great! Another is introduced as a great literary giant, but all that he has written is a dirty book. Then we have books for “children” that is absolute witchcraft. We used to believe that the educators had the solution to the problems of the world. Today they cannot even control their own campuses.
Isaiah 3:4 And I will give children to be their princes, and babes shall rule over them. (KJV)
As far as ability is concerned, men in high positions today should be wearing diapers. Juvenile adults are trying to be our rulers, and they are totally incompetent. That is exactly what brought Israel down to ruin in that day. Their leaders had the mental level of children, and God sent them into captivity. He judged them.
Isaiah 3:5 And the people shall be oppressed, every one by another, and every one by his neighbour: the child shall behave himself proudly against the ancient, and the base against the honourable. (KJV)
It really sounds as if Isaiah were talking about our day, but the same was true in his day. The child, the little college student, is saying, “Listen to me. I have something to say.” But what do thgey say? NOTHING! “The people shall be oppressed, every one by another.” We have minorities who want to inflict their ways on others. TRUE Christians too are a minority, but we are getting to the point of being silenced by our secular government. Many “laws” hinder us, many more shall follow. Mark my words.
Isaiah 3:8 For Jerusalem is ruined, and Judah is fallen: because their tongue and their doings are against the Lord, to provoke the eyes of his glory. (KJV)
“Jerusalem is ruined, and Judah is fallen,” that’s what the prophet says. How many of God’s men today are standing up and saying, “Our cities are ruined?” Is it true? YES! Just as true as it was in Isaiah’s time. “Because their tongue and their doings are against the Lord, to provoke the eyes of his glory.” This is the key to this chapter, and it is the key that can ruin Israel and of any other nation! God judges people and nations by their relationship to Him.
The problem with the United States is that God has been run out of Washington, D.C. God has also been run out of our schools. It won’t be long that teaching that God created the Universe and everything in it will not be allowed by the government. Our children will not have access to the absolute Truth of the Bible because the Bible is no longer being read or taught in the homes or schools. The schools are teaching evolution - - - that we descended from apes. How utterly ridiculous! God has been ruled out in every area of our lives. A few weak, little men think they can rule the world. Russia has humbled us. China has humbled us. Tiny Vietnam humbled us. We are being humbled all over the world; yet the USA doesn’t wake up. We continue merrily on our way, coasting downhill to Hell on our godly ancestry. It’s not going to work! If the USA does not waken up and soon, she shall be much more than humbled.
Isaiah 3:9 The shew of their countenance doth witness against them; and they declare their sin as Sodom, they hide it not. Woe unto their soul! for they have rewarded evil unto themselves. (KJV)
Sin is out in the open. What used to be done in the backyard behind a high fence, has now been moved to the front yard where everyone can see - - -because everyone is doing it and there is no longer any shame for sin, there is no fear of God! Some say that we are more honest now. No, we’re not more honest; we are the same hypocrites that our fathers were. They were hypocrites because they hid their sin. We are hypocrites because we do not hide our sin and say it’s OK. This is precisely what Israel was saying. But God says: Woe unto their soul! for they have rewarded evil unto themselves.
Isaiah 3:10 Say ye to the righteous, that it shall be well with him: for they shall eat the fruit of their doings. (KJV)
God promises to deliver those people who are true to Him; who reverence and respect Him, those who obey Him.
Isaiah 3:11 Woe unto the wicked! it shall be ill with him: for the reward of his hands shall be given him. (KJV)
Whatsoever a man sows, that shall he also reap. The apostle Paul said the same thing in Gal.6:7.
Isaiah 3:12 As for my people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, they which lead thee cause thee to err, and destroy the way of thy paths. (KJV)
A huge problem in our day is juvenile delinquency. The greatest increase in crime is among young people, and the kids get younger all the time! Women rule over them - - - the “women’s lib” do not like Isaiah, and they won’t like me any better even though I am a woman. O my people, they which lead thee cause thee to err, and destroy the way of thy paths. It is not clear here whether Isaiah meant women or effeminate men. Maybe a little of both. The women’s lib movement is another sign of a declining age. When women try to act like men, they are rising to a higher level - - - but are descending to the male level. God gave the woman a greater amount of tenderness, but when she becomes as cold and brutal as a man, she actually becomes worse than he is. That is the downfall of the nation. That was true in Israel’s case, and it will be true in the USA. Consider what caused the Roman Empire to fall. The nation that once ruled the world collapsed - - - not because they were attacked by someone on the outside - - - they fell from within.
Isaiah 3:13-15 The Lord standeth up to plead, and standeth to judge the people. [14] The Lord will enter into judgment with the ancients of his people, and the princes thereof: for ye have eaten up the vineyard; the spoil of the poor is in your houses. [15] What mean ye that ye beat my people to pieces, and grind the faces of the poor? saith the Lord God of hosts. (KJV)
The Lord is the Prosecuting Attorney, and He presents His case against His people! The leaders and the princes (rulers) will be the first to feel the Lord's judgment. They were accused of ruining Israel, taking advantage of the poor, filling their barns with grain extorted from helpless people. They had no right to grind His people into the dust like that. The spoil of the poor is in your houses - - - the Godless economic system is a big problem in our nation. But, what is the real problem? We have moved far away from God. God is there - - - ready to have mercy or ready to judge. He will let the nation determine which it will be. We can have it either way. He will do one or the other.
Lev. 26:25 And I will bring a sword upon you, that shall avenge the quarrel of my covenant: and when ye are gathered together within your cities, I will send the pestilence among you; and ye shall be delivered into the hand of the enemy. [KJV]
Lev.26:14-39 sets a curse Against Israel. Two things would bring their ruin: Contempt for His Words; and contempt for His corrections. Drastic judgments were brought against them.
Num.14:42-45 Go not up, for the LORD is not among you; that ye be not smitten before your enemies. [43] For the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there before you, and ye shall fall by the sword: because ye are turned away from the LORD, therefore the LORD will not be with you. [44] But they presumed to go up unto the hill top: nevertheless the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and Moses, departed not out of the camp[45] Then the Amalekites came down, and the Canaanites which dwelt in that hill, and smote them, and discomfited them, even unto Hormah. [KJV]
How utterly foolish of the Israelites! Just shortly before, they were afraid to possess the Land - - - although the Almighty King was with them, now they thought that they (without God) could expel the inhabitants on their own.
Deut. 1:42-46 And the LORD said unto me, Say unto them, Go not up, neither fight; for I am not among you; lest ye be smitten before your enemies. [43] So I spake unto you; and ye would not hear, but rebelled against the commandment of the LORD, and went presumptuously up into the hill. [44] And the Amorites, which dwelt in that mountain, came out against you, and chased you, as bees do, and destroyed you in Seir, even unto Hormah. [45] And ye returned and wept before the LORD; but the LORD would not hearken to your voice, nor give ear unto you. [46] So ye abode in Kadesh many days, according unto the days that ye abode there. [KJV]
It did NOT work! If God is not with you, you shall absolutely fail! Israel lost the battle.
Deut. 28:25-26 The LORD shall cause thee to be smitten before thine enemies: thou shalt go out one way against them, and flee seven ways before them: and shalt be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth. [26] And thy carcase shall be meat unto all fowls of the air, and unto the beasts of the earth, and no man shall fray them away. [KJV]
In Deut.28:25-44 many judgments are stated, all of which were fruits of the curses pronounced by God. (For curses, see: Deut.27:15-26; 28:15-44).
