God Tells Noah of the Coming Judgment
Genesis 6:11-13 The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence. 12 And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth. 13 And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth. (KJV)
God has a plan for the world, and He will not allow His plans for the world to be destroyed even by the willful disobedience of man to sin and destroy himself. If the corruption and violence on Earth had continued, in time, it would have been possible that there would have been no righteous men on Earth. God in His goodness, extended His grace to mankind in that He chose to use the last family on Earth who believed, to save mankind. God had promised that one day, He would send One would come who would undo the work of Satan in the Garden of Eden (Gen.3:15).
God Instructs Noah How to Build the Ark
Genesis 6:14-16 Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch. 15 And this is the fashion which thou shalt make it of: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits. 16 A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it. (KJV)
There is no doubt in my mind that building that ark must have brought great ridicule from ALL Noah's neighbors. Noah was building a boat in the middle of a desert, in a land up until then that had seen no rain. There is NO doubt at all that the blasphemy, laughing, mocking, ridicule, scorn, torment and persecution that Noah encountered day after day, could not have been tolerated, had it not been for the strength of the Lord sustaining him. We need to remember that when times get rough, we always have help! Phil. 4:13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. (KJV)
Noah told them that there was a great Flood coming and then preceded to build this enormous boat on dry land. It had not rained on Earth before the flood. Many think the surface waters on Earth were only in shallow seas. Where was this huge boat going to float? They could not believe what they could not see. It made no difference at all that God had said it. If they would have believed God, they would have believed what God said. God CANNOT lie! (Tit.1:2)
The ark was 450 feet long, 75 feet wide and 45 feet height figuring the cubic as 18 inches. The ark really was not a ship but rather a huge barge. The ark was not designed to travel under power, or be guided by Noah, it was simply to float upright in very rough waters.
The ark was constructed of gopher wood. Some translate the word as cypress, but no one can be sure this is correct. Many thousands of plant life and trees became extinct after the Flood. Gopher wood just may be one of these extinct trees. To make the barge water tight it was sealed inside and out with pitch, probably a tar like substance.
Inside the ark Noah was to build rooms. These would be for Noah and his family as living quarters, and thousands of compartments for the animals. The ark was to have three decks and have a window of one cubic (18 inches) in the highest deck. This window probably was in the top of the highest deck and ran the entire length of the ark. This would provide adequate air and ventilation.
Some have estimated the ark as having 95,000 sq. feet of floor space, about 1,396,000 cubic feet. Comparing the ark’s size to freight cars, it would be equal to ten freight trains of 52 cars each.
There is a very important spiritual truth found in Noah and the ark. Noah worked and did what seemed utterly ridiculous, and was God's lone witness to that wicked world. He was totally obedient to God. God could have saved Noah and his family in many different ways. But God has chosen to use the work of man, directed by Him, as the means of offering salvation to the world. It is just as true today as it was then. Noah first believed God, then in faith he went about the work that God had for him to do. Noah preached for about 100 years before the Flood came. Noah not only preached of the coming judgment of God, but he could be seen to be about the business of living for God every day of his life (Gen. 6:9). Noah not only gave the Lord lip service, he also worked hard physically, as all could see to be obedient to what God told him to do. It took 100 years of toil, sweat and hard labor to build the ark (Gen.5:32; 7:6). Although the world thought Noah to be a nut-case, they could not say that he did not believe and live what he professed.
The world knows what is right and what is right behavior for one who says he is a child of God, and the world also knows what a hypocrite is. The person who claims to know Christ and lives like all the rest of the world is NO witness for the Lord. It is not that the world does not know of Christ and the Truth, but they see little proof that is has much effect on those who claim to profess it. It is sad to say that in the majority of those who use the Name of Christ (Christian), do not claim the power of God to help in their daily life.
Does God tell us of coming judgment? I say YES! All we have to do is open the Bible and read what God did in the past, and what He has promised to do in the future. Since God cannot lie, we have every reason to trust Him to do as He says. JUDGMENT IS COMING!!! God says so!
2 Cor. 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. (KJV)
2 Peter 2:4 For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment; (KJV)
Acts 17:31 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead. (KJV)
Ecclesiastes 12:14 For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil. (KJV)
Hebrews 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: (KJV)
Wickedness all around us! Wickedness is worsening continually, just as it did in the days before the Flood! WHERE will you spend eternity?
