WHO Deserves God’s Wrath?
God’s furious hatred of sin is continuously being revealed from Heaven against ungodly men because they have the Truth, but instead they flee from it . . . into the devil’s pit of religion. By doing this, is blasphemy because it substitutes a false god for the One TRUE God. God’s righteous anger never rises and never falls. It is always at high level in the presence of sin because He is unchangeable and always holy, so God is constantly revealing His wrath against sin. Psalm 7:11 God judgeth the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day. (KJV)
God is angry continually every day, against sin.
Does God have a right to be angry? YES! Absolutely! How could One who delights only in what is pure and lovely not hate what is impure and ugly? How could He who is infinitely holy ignore sin that violates His Holiness? How could God Who loves all that is pure, righteous and holy not hate and act severely toward any sin? There is NO way that He could look with approval upon good and evil equally. He could NOT and He CANNOT because He is holy, just and good. He hates sin. And He has a perfect right to react because man is guilty. People have turned their backs on God. God’s wrath is simply His proper reaction of holiness to wickedness.
We must understand the grace of God before we can understand the wrath of God. Before we can understand the meaning of the death of Christ, and before we can understand how loving God is, and how forgiving He is, and how gracious He is, we have to understand how guilty and undeserving we are.
God’s wrath is a divine perfection, just as is His love or His holiness. It’s just as much a part of His perfection as anything else, and it is a divine perfection. Psalm 95:11 Unto whom I sware in my wrath that they should not enter into my rest. (KJV)
God says certain things in His wrath. He swears in His wrath that He shall do certain things.
Now there are two occasions of God’s swearing in the Old Testament. One is when He makes a Promise, such as: Gen. 22:16 And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son: (KJV)
The other time is when God swears in denouncing and calling for judgment, such as: Deut. 1:34 And the LORD heard the voice of your words, and was wroth, and sware, saying, 35 Surely there shall not one of these men of this evil generation see that good land, which I sware to give unto your fathers, (KJV)
We know that God swears in mercy to His children and sometimes He swears to terrify the wicked. God will just as surely bring wrath on the wicked as He will bring His mercy on the just. Dear one, He swears to do both and we must understand that. God is perfectly loving just as He is perfectly angry because all mankind are guilty. Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; (KJV)
Reasons why God’s anger is justified.
#1. Romans 1:19-20 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. 20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse. (KJV) . . . His eternal power and Godhead, His supernatural nature and His great power can be SEEN just by looking at Creation.
#2. Romans 1:21-23 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, 23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. (KJV)
Consider the following:
(a.) People knew God in general through the disclosure of Creation.
God’s Creation makes His attributes clear to all people, up until they suppress it. There is also the universal presence of a person’s conscience.
(b.) People did not glorify God or give thanks. This is the root sin. Although people know about God, they do NOT give Him the proper honor and glory He deserves, and they do NOT thank Him for the many undeserved blessings He bestows on them. Do you glorify God for His goodness and mercy and grace? Do you thank God for His many blessings that He showers on you every day?
(c.) As a result, the foolish hearts of sinners were darkened. To be in the dark refers to total moral and spiritual blindness. Only God can shine His light into dark hearts (2 Cor.4:4-6).
(d.) As a result of darkened hearts, sinners profess to be wise, but are fools. Since the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Ps.111:10), those who do NOT fear God or bow before Him as God profess to be wise, but are fools (Ps.14:1). Fools refers to spiritual and moral deficiency.
(e.) This foolishness is shown by worshiping the creature instead of the Creator.
#3. Romans 1:28-32 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; 29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, 30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: 32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them. (KJV)
For the 3rd time, God states He will give them up (vs. 24, 26, 28). Because people refuse to keep in mind the Truth about God, He has given them over to their corrupted minds, allowing them to do things that they should not do. If anyone thinks they can live in the perversion of this modern day, and not come under God’s wrath, they are fooling only themselves. Is there a way out? A definite YES! Repent and turn to Christ for deliverance.
There are many who are filled with all kinds of wickedness, greed and vice; they are full of deceit, distrust, envy, hatred, hostility, malice and murder. They lie and gossip, speaking evil of one another; they are hateful to God, they are disrespectful, proud, always boasting and dreaming up ways to do evil. They disobey parents; have no conscience; they never keep promises, and never show kindness or pity to others. This is a scary list of sins of those who do not know our Lord Jesus. They are in continual rebellion against God!
Romans 1:32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them. [KJV]
People know that God says people who live in this way deserve death. Yet they keep on doing wrong things, and even approve of, and encourage others to do them. Romans Chapter 1 is a wake-up call for self-examination. The result should be our deep conviction of sin, and our need for deliverance from that state of God’s condemnation. 1 Cor. 11:31 For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. (KJV)
God pours out His wrath on those who have rejected what He reveals about Himself, those who worship the creature instead of the Creator? The only chance we have is believing God (1 John 5:10), and faith in the love and righteousness of Jesus, His only begotten Son. Romans 5:1-2 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: 2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
