IDOLATRY
Introduction

Idolatry is absolutely forbidden in the Bible.
Exodus 20:5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; (KJV)
Deut. 5:9 Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me, (KJV)

God is VERY clear about idolatry!
Exodus 20:3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. (KJV) . . . God was speaking to Israel here. They had just come from Egypt, a land of many idols and many gods. Because each god represented a different condition of life, it was common to worship many gods so they could get the maximum number of blessings. When God told His people to worship and believe in Him, that wasn’t really so hard for them, BUT . . . they just added more gods to their list. But when He said, “You shall have no other gods before me,” that was very difficult for the people to accept. They should have learned that the God who led them out of Egypt was the ONE and only true God, and they could never be His people . . . no matter how faithfully they kept the other nine commandments IF they broke the 1st commandment. That is why God made this one His first commandment and stressed it more than the others.

Today it is so easy to allow many things to become gods to us. Money, fame, work, family, loved ones, possessions or pleasure can become gods when we concentrate too much on them and not enough on God. When we do this, we put God on a back burner. He is no longer first and this angers Him. No one sets out intentionally to worship these things, and you may say “But I don’t worship money or pleasure.” But the amount of time we devote to them, makes them gods that in the end, they control our thoughts and energies. This is why we MUST let God be the center of our lives . . . to keep any of these things from turning into gods for us.

The first commandment is about what we worship, and that is JEHOVAH GOD; He and He alone. The worship of creatures or anything else is strictly forbidden. Anything that comes short of perfect love, gratitude, reverence, or worship of God, breaks this commandment. Whatsoever ye do, do all the glory of God.

Since the Ten Commandments were given to Israel (Ex.19:20; 20:1-2; Deut.5:1), must we obey the commandments? Idolatry was practiced long before the Ten Commandments were given by God to Israel (Gen.31:19; 35:2-4). Idolatry is wrong! Idolatry is a sin! So . . . how does this Law apply to us in the New Testament? We must NOT worship anyone or anything other than Almighty God (Acts 17:29; Rom.1:22-23; 1 Cor.5:11; 1 Pet.4:3; 1 John 5:21). Idolatry is image-worship or divine honor paid to anything or person rather than God. Idolatry is a SIN!

IDOLATRY
Describing Idolatry   Chapter 1

Idolatry is image-worship or divine honor paid to any person or created object. Paul describes idolatry in:
Romans 1:21-25 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. [22] Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, [23] And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. [24] Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: [25] Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. (KJV) . . . People know there is a God, but they won’t worship Him as God, and as for thanking Him, gratitude is a part of worship, and they do not thank Him. “Why thank God?” Many people would ask. “I am responsible for all I have and am, not God.” The ideas people have about God, are stupid! The pride they have is far from the humility and meekness God desires. They think they know it all, but their minds are dark and confused. Satan sees to that! Instead of worshiping the one and only God, the ever-glorious, ever-living God, they worship something created, NOT the Creator!

God gives each of us a mind of our own. We have a free will to decide things for ourselves. So, quite often we make wrong choices. It’s our decision, and if we make wrong or bad decisions, we must pay the consequences, no one else, us! God allows us to do our own thing! He allows us to sin if we so desire. He allows us to do any shameful things our hearts desire. And as a result, people do repulsive and degrading things with each other’s bodies. Instead of believing the Truth about God, they choose to believe lies. When people forsake God, they sink deeper and deeper into a reckless and immoral lifestyle.
Romans 1:28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; (KJV) When people refuse to acknowledge God, He abandons them to their evil minds and lets them do wicked things that they should never do. So, is God to blame? NO! You are!

Different forms of idolatry are:

(1.) Fetishism, is the worship of trees, rivers, hills, stones, etc.
(2.) Nature worship, is the worship of the sun, moon, and stars, as the supposed powers of nature.
(3.) Hero worship, the worship of deceased ancestors, or of heroes.

In the Bible, idolatry is always regarded as beginning with heathens, and it was imported among the Hebrews through contact with heathen nations. The first allusion to idolatry is in the account of Rachel stealing her father's images (Gen.31:19), which were the relics of the worship of other gods by Laban’s progenitors “on the other side of the river in old time” (Josh.24:2). During their long stay in Egypt the Hebrews fell deep into idolatry, and it was a long time before they were delivered from it (Josh.24:14; Eze.20:7). God’s displeasure was great because of this sin.

The idolatry Israel learned in Egypt was most likely rooted out from among them during their 40 years’ in the wilderness. But, when the Jews went into the Promised Land, they came into contact again with idolatry, this time of the Canaanites. They simply were inclined to depart from the living God and follow the idolatrous practices of the heathen nations. This was their great national sin, for which God, in His anger, sent them into the Babylonian exile. That exile purified the Jews of idolaty again.

The 1st and 2nd commandments are directed against idolatry of every form. Individual offenders were doomed to destruction (Ex.22:20). His nearest relatives were not only bound to condemn him and deliver him up to punishment (Deut. 13:9-10), but their hands were to strike the first blow when, and on the evidence of two witnesses at least, he was stoned to death (Deut. 17:2-7).

Trying to seduce someone to false worship was an equally great crime (Deut. 13:6-10). And an idolatrous nation shared the same fate. When Israel took possession of the land, they were commanded to destroy every trace of every kind of the existing idolatry of the Canaanites (Ex.23:24, 32; 34:13; Deut. 7:5, 25; 12:1-3).

In the New Testament idolatry is used to indicate or mean covetousness.
Luke 16:13 No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. (KJV) . . . Money has the power to take God’s place in your life. It can become very easily your master. Money is a hard master and a deceiving one. Wealth promises power and control, but so often it does NOT deliver. Great fortunes can be made, and lost, overnight, and there is NO amount of money that can give you love, health, happiness, or eternal life. It is much better to let God be your Master. His servants have peace of mind and security, both now and forever.
Luke 12:15 And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. (KJV) . . . A good life has nothing to do with being wealthy. I have known some very wealthy people in my lifetime, and when I look back, it is very clear that NONE of them were/are happy. Beware of greed!  Greed is simply lusting for something you don’t have. God’s way is usually the exact opposite of what society says. Advertisers spend millions of dollars to entice people, causing them to think that if they buy more and more of their products, they will be happier, more fulfilled, more comfortable. There is a constant pressure to buy something all the time! Learn to tune out these enticements and concentrate instead on the truly good life . . . having a close relationship with God and doing His work.

Ephes. 5:5 For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. (KJV) . . . We are NOT forbidden all contact with unbelievers, because we are to try to lead them to Christ. Jesus taught His followers to befriend sinners and lead them to Him (Luke 5:30-32). But, we are NOT to condone a life-style of people who make excuses for bad behavior. If we are to lead unbelievers to Christ, we must befriend them; but we must be very careful of those who are viciously evil, immoral, or opposed to Christ and all that Christianity stands for. We are NOT to cast our pearls before swine (Mat.7:6). It is nearly always that bad people will influence good people, rather than the other way around.
Ephes. 5:6 Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. (KJV) . . . Do NOT be led astray by those who try to excuse these sins, for God’s terrible wrath shall come upon everyone who disobeys Him.

Col. 3:5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: (KJV) . . . TRUE children of God should consider themselves dead and unresponsive to sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed. Just like unhealthy limbs on a tree, these sins must be cut off before they destroy you. You must remove anything that feeds these desires and rely on the Holy Spirit’s power to help you. On the news recently they said that 40% of all Christians have, or still do look at pornography on the internet. My friend, a TRUE child of God will NOT participate in such evil trash! If for some reason you have done this, (backslid from God), turn away from it and ALL sexual sin, impurity, lust, and shameful desires, and turn back to God and stay there! Have nothing to do with such wickedness, for God will certainly bring down on you His righteous wrath and judgment! These things are IDOLATRY!

Hebrews 13:5 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. (KJV) . . . God clearly tells us here that we should stay away from the love of money, and to be satisfied with what we have.
1 Tim. 6:10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. (KJV) . . . The love of money is the root of every kind of evil. Many people who lust after money have strayed from the faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows. We should take God at His Word! He makes a Promise to us, “I will never fail you. I will never forsake you.” My friend, CLAIM this Promise for yourself! Money, riches and possessions are temporary! Don’t make them your god, your idol.
Mat.6:20-21 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: [21] For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. (KJV) . . . Being worldly-minded is a common and fatal error, for Satan gets a sure hold on your soul. The joys of the other world above, is where we should place our happiness, for that will be our incorruptible inheritance (1 Peter 1:4).

IDOLATRY
Wicked Practices   Chapter 2

Human sacrifices.
Leviticus 18:21 And thou shalt not let any of thy seed pass through the fire to Molech, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am the Lord. (KJV) . . . Offering children as sacrifices was a common practice in pagan religions and cultures. But God dealt harshly with those in Israel who began to follow these evil, horrendous, murderous practices.  Society today takes abortion very lightly, trying, in their eyes, to make it acceptable. But my friend, abortion is murder! Abortion is the same thing as sacrificing children to Molech! If you consider abortion acceptable, you are NOT judging by God’s holy and right standards. Abortion is a SIN! A deadly sin!
2 Kings 16:3 But he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, yea, and made his son to pass through the fire, according to the abominations of the heathen, whom the Lord cast out from before the children of Israel. (KJV) . . . King Ahaz was so depraved and corrupt that he sacrificed his own son to pagan gods. This was a practice of the Canaanites whom the Israelites were supposed to drive out of the land.
2 Chron. 28:3 Moreover he burnt incense in the valley of the son of Hinnom, and burnt his children in the fire, after the abominations of the heathen whom the Lord had cast out before the children of Israel. (KJV) . . . Sacrificing children was a monstrous evil of these pagans. Anyone who offers young children as sacrifices, then or now shall come before an Almighty Judge one day and try to explain what they did. Today the practice of sacrificing children has NOT lessened. The sacrifice of unborn children to today’s gods of convenience, economy and whim continues daily in sterile medical facilities in numbers that would simply amaze the wicked Ahaz. If we are to allow children to come to Christ (Mat.19:14), we must first allow them to come into the world.
Psalm 106:37-38 Yea, they sacrificed their sons and their daughters unto devils, [38] And shed innocent blood, even the blood of their sons and of their daughters, whom they sacrificed unto the idols of Canaan: and the land was polluted with blood. (KJV) . . . This practice too, is still used today. People still sacrifice their sons and their daughters to demons.  They still shed the innocent blood of their children. By sacrificing them to the idols of Canaan, they polluted the land with murder. What about today? Is it any different? The way of sin runs swiftly down-hill. One sin leads to many more, and will always bring on the judgments of God. Sinners often blame others for leading them into evil. But my friend, if YOU make the decision to do wrong, you cannot blame someone else. It’s your fault, no one else!
Isaiah 57:5 Enflaming yourselves with idols under every green tree, slaying the children in the valleys under the clifts of the rocks? (KJV) . . . Israel worshiped idols with great passion, beneath every green tree. They slaughtered their children as human sacrifices in the valleys, under overhanging rocks. People lean towards a religion that arouses their unholy passions. They are easily led to do any evil, however bad or vile. To set up anything instead of God, for your hope and confidence, will never come to a right end. Those who forsake the only right way, wander in hundreds of by-paths of evil. If you do not care about God and His blessings, you have no fear of God. Sin NEVER profits! It ruins and destroys your soul! One day you shall stand before God! Believe this!
Ezekiel 20:31 For when ye offer your gifts, when ye make your sons to pass through the fire, ye pollute yourselves with all your idols, even unto this day: and shall I be enquired of by you, O house of Israel? As I live, saith the Lord God, I will not be enquired of by you. (KJV) . . . Israel was offering gifts to idols, giving their children to be burned as sacrifices. They continued to pollute themselves. But what about the “church” of today? Many “professing” Christians today are like Laban, having images in their homes (Gen.31). Many “professing” Christians have many idols, with sports being close to the top! If churches would fill just half as what football stadiums do, that would be something! People today “pollute” themselves with idols, just as Israel did all those years ago. The Jews persisted in rebellion after they settled in the land of Canaan, and people today persist in rebellion against God.
Ezekiel 23:37 That they have committed adultery, and blood is in their hands, and with their idols have they committed adultery, and have also caused their sons, whom they bare unto me, to pass for them through the fire, to devour them. (KJV) . . . This is speaking of spiritual adultery, or idolatry. The Bible shows a history of the apostasy of God’s people from Him, over and over again, and this generation today is no better than Israel was back then.
Ezekiel 23:39 For when they had slain their children to their idols, then they came the same day into my sanctuary to profane it; and, lo, thus have they done in the midst of mine house. (KJV) . . . The Israelites were so brazen as to sacrifice their own children to idols, and then go to the Temple and offer a sacrifice to the Lord the same day! This is a blasphemous mockery of worship! Many women who abort their children, husbands who agree with this atrocity, and the doctors who perform the abortions, go to ‘church’ and act as good and righteous people. This is absurd. You CANNOT willfully sin, then turn around and attempt to praise God. It’s like celebrating a wedding anniversary, then going to bed with a neighbor.
Pro.15:8 The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord: but the prayer of the upright is his delight. (KJV) . . . The Lord hates the sacrifices of wicked people!
Pro.21:27 The sacrifice of the wicked is abomination: how much more, when he bringeth it with a wicked mind? (KJV) . . . This worship (sacrifice) is no better than trying to bribe God. Do you try to bribe God? You may go to church, tithe, or volunteer, not because you love and are devoted to God, but because you hope God will bless you in return. It’s NOT going to happen that way my friend! God has made it very clear that He wants obedience and love from us, NOT religious ritual (Pro.21:3; 1 Sam. 15:22). God does not want sacrifices of time, energy, and money alone; He wants our hearts, and our complete love and devotion. We cannot bribe God.
Also see the following verses: Lev.20:2-5; Deut. 12:31; Deut. 18:10; 2 Kings 3:26-27; 17:17-18; 21:6; 23:10; 2 Chron. 33:6; Jer.7:31; 19:4-7; 32:35; Eze. 16:20-21; 20:26; Mic.6:7.

IDOLATRY
Immoral Practices   Chapter 3

Licentiousness of idolatry.
Exodus 32:25 And when Moses saw that the people were naked; (for Aaron had made them naked unto their shame among their enemies:) (KJV) . . . Aaron made them a golden calf (idol, vs.4) when Moses went up the mountain. Aaron was a wise man, but they sure did talk him into something stupid! The return of Moses turned the dancing into trembling. They were shamed by their sin. Moses took a strong course of action! He severely punished it. The Levites were to put to death the ringleaders in this wickedness.
Numbers 25:1-3 And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab. [2] And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods: and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods. [3] And Israel joined himself unto Baal-peor: and the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel. (KJV) . . . The Bible doesn’t say how they got involved in sexual immorality, but ‘sacred prostitution’ was a common practice among Canaanite religions. At first, they didn’t think about worshiping idols; they just wanted sex. But before long they were attending local feasts that involved idol worship. Do NOT slacken or compromise your standards to justify your desires.
1 Kings 14:24 And there were also sodomites in the land: and they did according to all the abominations of the nations which the Lord cast out before the children of Israel. (KJV) . . . There were many shrine prostitutes throughout the land. The people imitated the disgusting homosexual practices of the pagan nations. Homosexuality is a SIN, no matter what YOU may call it. To God is an abomination! If you are engaged in this practice, you are in great danger of hellfire. Same sex marriages are detested by Almighty God, even if the vast majority of people think it’s OK. It is NOT OK!
1 Kings 15:12 And he took away the sodomites out of the land, and removed all the idols that his fathers had made. (KJV) . . . Asa was one of the very few good kings. He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord. Asa cast out all the homosexual shrine prostitutes from the land and removed all the idols his ancestors had made. We must not only stop doing evil, but learn to do well in its place. We must cast away all the idols of our iniquity, but also dedicate ourselves completely to God’s honor and glory.
2 Kings 23:7 And he brake down the houses of the sodomites, that were by the house of the Lord, where the women wove hangings for the grove. (KJV) . . . Read verses 4-14. Although Josiah’s father and grandfather were very wicked kings, he was a good king, who was willing to accept God’s guidance. Josiah never knew his great-grandfather Hezekiah, but they were alike in many ways; both had close, personal relationships with God. Josiah was only 8 years old when he became king. In the 18th year of his reign (2 Kings 22:1-3), he saw that there was great spiritual sickness in the land. Idols were sprouting up everywhere. Josiah destroyed whatever did not belong to the worship of the TRUE God. In the process, God’s Word was rediscovered. The king’s intentions and the power of God’s written Word (prophecy) were brought together. Josiah was prompted by his own intense hatred of idolatry, as he destroyed all the wickedness in the country. It is really remarkable that his actions were predicted 326 years before his birth, and he was mentioned by name, as well as the very place where it should be done (1 Kings 13:2; 2 Kings 23:16). This is just one of the many absolutely remarkable prophecies, and its fulfillment, in the Bible.
Hosea 4:13 They sacrifice upon the tops of the mountains, and burn incense upon the hills, under oaks and poplars and elms, because the shadow thereof is good: therefore your daughters shall commit whoredom, and your spouses shall commit adultery. (KJV) . . . They offered sacrifices to idols on the tops of mountains because they would be nearer to the heavenly hosts which they worshipped. That led to their daughters turning to prostitution, and their wives committing adultery.
Amos 2:8 And they lay themselves down upon clothes laid to pledge by every altar, and they drink the wine of the condemned in the house of their god. (KJV) . . . The evil passions of the heart comes in many ways. God looks at our motives, as well as our conduct.
Jer.17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? (KJV) . . . Judah despised the law of the Lord; and God gave them up to strong delusion. Some of the worst abominations and most grievous sins have been committed by some of those who profess to be worshippers of the Lord. This kind of conduct leads many to unbelief and a start to repulsive idolatry. A TRUE child of God must be very careful of their lifestyle because we do NOT know who is watching us.
Micah 1:7 And all the graven images thereof shall be beaten to pieces, and all the hires thereof shall be burned with the fire, and all the idols thereof will I lay desolate: for she gathered it of the hire of an harlot, and they shall return to the hire of an harlot. (KJV) . . . Micah’s message was that all Judah’s images would be smashed to pieces, and all her sacred treasures would be burned up.

Two grievous sins are identified in Micah’s message:

  • #1 the perversion of worship (Mic.1:7; 3:5-7,11; 5:12-13) and
  • #2 injustice toward others (Mic.2:1-2, 8-9; 3:2-3, 9-11; 7:2-6). Raging in the capital cities, these sins infected the entire country.

Times have not changed much, have they?
Romans 1:24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: (KJV) . . . When people choose to reject God, God allows them to do it. We all have a free will. God does not force us to do the right thing, but God does NOT stop us from making choices that are against His will. He lets us declare our independence from Him, even though He knows we will eventually be sorry, and that in time we will become slaves to our own rebellious choices. If life without God looks like freedom to you, look more closely. There is no worse slavery than slavery to sin.
Romans 1:26-27 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: [27] And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet. (KJV) . . . God’s plan for natural sexual relationships is His ideal plan for His Creation. Sin distorts the natural use of God’s gifts. Sin means not only denying and defying God, but also refusing to accept the way He made us. People have distorted views about sex. They say that any sex act is acceptable, just as long as nobody gets hurt. Wrong! They fool only themselves. ALL sin hurts someone in some way. Homosexuality is to exchange or abandon natural relations of sex. It was widespread in the apostle Paul’s time, just as it is in ours. Many pagan practices encouraged it, then and now. God is willing to receive anyone who comes to Him in faith, and God’s TRUE children should love and accept others no matter what their background. BUT, homosexuality is strictly forbidden in Scripture.

Homosexuality is considered an acceptable practice by the majority of people in our world today; even by some “churches;” even by the pope. BUT . . . society does NOT set the standard for God’s law, neither does the pope. Most homosexuals believe that their desires are normal and that they have a right to express them. But that is NOT what God clearly states in His Word! It is and always has been an absolutely detestable abomination to Him (Lev.18:22; 20:13). Abnormal desires that violate God’s laws must be controlled. If you have these desires, you can and must resist acting upon them. Stay away from any place or activity you know will stimulate temptations of this kind. Don’t ever underestimate the power of Satan to tempt you, and be assured that judgment is sure to fall on you if you continue on this wrong road. God can and will forgive sexual sins just as He forgives other sins (1 John 1:9), BUT YOU MUST REPENT. Surrender yourself to the grace and mercy of God, asking Him to show you the way out of your enslaving sin and into the light of His freedom and love. He will help you. Homosexuality is a form of covetousness which is idolatry. God hates it. It is an abomination to Him.
1 Cor. 10:7-8 Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play. [8] Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand. (KJV) . . . Verse 7 is referring to when the Israelites made a golden calf and worshiped it in the desert (Ex.32). Verse 8 is referring to Num.25:1-9 when the Israelites worshiped Baal of Peor and engaged in sexual immorality with Moabite women. God, through the apostle Paul, was warning the Corinthians (and us) not to worship idols or commit sexual sins.
1 Peter 4:3-4 For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries: [4] Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you: (KJV) . . . Peter warns against living an ungodly lifestyle. Indecency, lust, drunkenness, orgies, wild, vulgar, unrestrained drug parties, and the abominable worship of idols are NOT for God’s TRUE children!
Rev. 9:20-21 And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk: [21] Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts. (KJV) . . . These people were so hardhearted that even plagues God sent, did not make them turn to Him. This is speaking of the Great Tribulation period when the wrath of God will come upon all the unbelieving (the wicked). We are speeding towards this time. The next prophetic event to take place is the Rapture (1 Thes.4:13-18), immediately followed by the Great Tribulation period. Christ COULD come at any time to take believers home to Heaven at the Rapture.
Rev. 17:1-6 And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters: [2] With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication. (KJV) . . . The great whore is the apostate church that will be left on Earth after Jesus takes the TRUE church to Heaven at the Rapture. This “church” will consist of EVERY denomination on Earth. The world is rushing to a one-world government and a one-world church that is necessary for the Book of Revelation prophecies to be fulfilled (Rev.13, 17) by the coming Antichrist. Some Bible scholars think he is already alive in the world today.

IDOLATRY
Various Abominable Practices   Chapter 4

Incense burned on altars.
Isaiah 65:3 A people that provoketh me to anger continually to my face; that sacrificeth in gardens, and burneth incense upon altars of brick; (KJV) . . . People directly disobey God when they worship, burn incense and sacrifice to idols (Ex.20:1-6). People then and now, are so perverse that they think they are more religious than others. Jesus called such people hypocrites (Mat.23:13-36).
Jeremiah 1:16 And I will utter my judgments against them touching all their wickedness, who have forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, and worshipped the works of their own hands. (KJV) . . . The people of Judah sinned greatly by continuing to burn incense to and worship other gods. God had commanded them specifically against this (Ex.20:3-6). Idolatry places trust in created things instead of the Creator. Although these people should have worshipped only God, they chose to follow false gods. There are a multitude of gods, each trying to entice us to turn away from the One and Only TRUE God. Money, material possessions, dreams for the future, approval of others, pleasure, even your job can compete for total commitment to God. Chasing after these things at the expense of our commitment to God, puts our heart where Judah’s was . . . and God severely punished Judah. Please consider this.
Hosea 11:2 As they called them, so they went from them: they sacrificed unto Baalim, and burned incense to graven images. (KJV) . . . Burning incense and/or candles to other gods, persons and/or images is a blatant SIN! When people backslide from God and His goodness, they choose to backslide; choose to forsake Him; they are ready to sin. They fall for every temptation that comes their way. Their hearts are set to do evil, and they do it. God hates idolatry!

Prayers to idols.
1 Kings 18:25 And Elijah said unto the prophets of Baal, Choose you one bullock for yourselves, and dress it first; for ye are many; and call on the name of your gods, but put no fire under. (KJV)
1 Kings 18:27 And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud: for he is a god; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth, and must be awaked. (KJV) . . . The prophets of Baal put their offering on the altar, and Elijah told them to call on their gods to consume the offering with fire.
1 Kings 18:27-29 And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud: for he is a god; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth, and must be awaked. [28] And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them. [29] And it came to pass, when midday was past, and they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded. (KJV) . . . All day long the 450 prophets of Baal begged and shouted, and cut themselves, but their god did NOT answer. Then Elijah told the Israelites to make a decision: Jehovah or Baal! If they chose the Creator God, and Judge of the world, they were to follow Him and Him alone. Elijah told them that the God that brought down fire to consume the offering, let Him be God. Elijah was a man of faith and his few words uttered to God in prayer amazes me! A brief 63 word prayer (1 Kings 18:36-37), in confident faith, with earnest devotion for the glory of God, and love for the souls of men, was truly the effectual, fervent prayer of the righteous man (James 5:16), and it certainly did avail much that day, for it brought down the fire from God that consumed entirely the water drenched sacrifice on the altar. Just as God flashed fire from Heaven for Elijah, He will help us accomplish what He commands us to do. Our help may not be as dramatic as was Elijah’s, but God will make resources available to us to accomplish His purposes. We like Elijah, can also
have faith. Any time God commands us to do something, He will provide whatever we need to carry it through. Believe this!

Praising idols.
Judges 16:21-24 But the Philistines took him, and put out his eyes, and brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of brass; and he did grind in the prison house. [22] Howbeit the hair of his head began to grow again after he was shaven. [23] Then the lords of the Philistines gathered them together for to offer a great sacrifice unto Dagon their god, and to rejoice: for they said, Our god hath delivered Samson our enemy into our hand. [24] And when the people saw him, they praised their god: for they said, Our god hath delivered into our hands our enemy, and the destroyer of our country, which slew many of us. (KJV) . . . Samson was a thorn in the sides of the Philistines. He had burned their wheat, corn and olive harvest (Jud.15:3-5); then took a jawbone of an ass (Jud.15:9-17) and killed 1000 men. The Philistines were thrilled when Delilah seduced Samson and found that his long hair was the secret to his strength (Jud. 16:4-20). The Phillistines shaved Samson’s head, put out his eyes and forced him to grind grain in the prison. Instead of a mighty warrior, Samson was now a slave. But, his hair started to grow again and they didn’t pay any attention to it.

There came a time when the people, half drunk, demanded that Samson be brought out so they could ridicule him. They set him between the two pillars supporting the roof. Samson said to the boy that held him by the hand, “Put my hands on the pillars so I can lean upon them.” The temple was filled with people. All the Philistine leaders were there, and there were about three thousand on the roof who were watching Samson and making fun of him. And Samson said unto the Lord, O Lord God, remember me, I pray thee, and strengthen me, I pray thee, only this once, O God, that I may be at once avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes.

Then Samson put his hands on the center pillars of the temple and pushed against them with all his might. And Samson said, Let me die with the Philistines. And he pushed with all his might; and the house fell upon everyone that was there. The dead that he killed that day was more than all those he killed in his lifetime.

When Samson was captured, the Phillistines gave credit to their chief god, Dagon. But, Samson’s God, the ONLY true God, came through for him.

Many temples were built to Dagon, and worship to him included human sacrifice. The temples were also the local entertainment centers. People would sit on the flat temple roof and look below to the courtyard. They would often see the torture and humiliation of prisoners. Because the Philistines had control over Israel, they thought their god was stronger. But when the ark of God was placed before Dagon in a similar temple, the idol fell over and broke into pieces (1 Sam.5:1-7). NO idol can ever match God’s strength.
Daniel 5:3-5 Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of the house of God which was at Jerusalem; and the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, drank in them. [4] They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone. [5] In the same hour came forth fingers of a man's hand, and wrote over against the candlestick upon the plaister of the wall of the king's palace: and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote. (KJV) . . . King Belshazzar gave a great feast for a thousand of his nobles and drank wine with them. While Belshazzar was drinking, he gave orders to bring in the gold and silver cups that Nebuchadnezzar, his father, had taken from the Temple in Jerusalem. He, his nobles, his wives, and his concubines drank from them, making toasts to honor their idols made of gold, silver, bronze, iron, wood, and stone. In that same hour, means that God wasted no time bringing down judgment on the king for his defiance against God; his profanation of the Temple vessels and God’s Holy Name. God warns him, not by a dream (as He did Nebuchadnezzar Dan.4:1-37), or by a voice, but by a part of the hand (fingers) writing on the wall. The incident moved the king to a frightening and awful seriousness of the scene; the Hand of the Unseen One was declaring judgment before the eyes of the king and his guilty fellow revelers. The con-demnation was directed against the blasphemous act the king knowingly and willingly had done. That very night Belshazzar was killed, and Darius took over his kingdom. You should NEVER do anything that will bring dishonor or displeasure to God. You should NEVER give praise to a stupid idol or image of any kind, because one day you too will experience the wrath of God. Maybe your judgment won’t be as swift as Belshazzar, but God will bring judgment on ALL sin! We should give honor and praise to the true God, and He alone!

Music
Daniel 3:5-7 That at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, dulcimer, and all kinds of musick, ye fall down and worship the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king hath set up: [6] And whoso falleth not down and worshippeth shall the same hour be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace. [7] Therefore at that time, when all the people heard the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and all kinds of musick, all the people, the nations, and the lan-guages, fell down and worshipped the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up. (KJV) . . . Nebuchadnezzar built a huge golden image, about 90 feet high and 9 feet wide. Pride and bigotry causes rulers to demand that their subjects follow their religion, whether right or wrong, and when punishment frightens them, few refuse. The people were drawn to the idol by a concert of music. When they heard the music, they were to bow to the ground to worship the statue. Anyone who refused would be thrown into a blazing furnace. Everyone obeyed, except the three Jewish boys. They refused, and were thrown into that horribly hot furnace. But that is NOT the end of the story!
Daniel 3:24-25 Then Nebuchadnezzar the king was astonied, and rose up in haste, and spake, and said unto his counsellors, Did not we cast three men bound into the midst of the fire? They answered and said unto the king, True, O king. [25] He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God. (KJV) . . . The Lord Jesus came to these young men’s rescue because they were faithful to God and did not bow to the idol.

Cutting the flesh
1 Kings 18:28 And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them. (KJV)
God never requires His worshippers to be like the worshippers of Baal. Baal’s prophets shouted loudly, and cut themselves with knives and swords until the blood gushed out. God does NOT require this of us! He requires us to have FAITH (Gen.4:3-7; Heb.11:6), and that we worship Him in spirit and truth (John 4:23-24). Disobedience to God will bring a horrifying end!

IDOLATRY
Chapter 5
Objects of the sun, moon, and stars

Deut. 4:19 And lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun, and the moon, and the stars, even all the host of heaven, shouldest be driven to worship them, and serve them, which the Lord thy God hath divided unto all nations under the whole heaven. (KJV) . . . Idol worship is not just statues or images. It is being committed to other evil qualities, beliefs, and practices the idolatry represented, like murder, prostitution, cruelty in war, self-centeredness, greed or to strengths and attributes of man, pleasures of man, the animal kingdom, or the sun, moon and stars that were/are revered without reference (or reverence) to God who created them. Because God had so clearly revealed Himself to Israel, the Israelites had no excuse for worshiping anyone but the One and Only TRUE God. But, what about us? We have God’s Holy Word! It is absolute and faultless Truth! And the Bible clearly states that God hates idolatry of any kind! Believe it. God is good, and wants nothing but the best for us. But, it is OUR decision.
2 Kings 17:16 And they left all the commandments of the Lord their God, and made them molten images, even two calves, and made a grove, and worshipped all the host of heaven, and served Baal. (KJV) . . . Israel disobeyed all the commands of the Lord their God and made two golden calves. They also worshiped Baal and all the forces of heaven, worshiping the sun, moon, and constellations. (Also see 2 Kings 21:1-6; 23:4-5.) God hates idolatry!
2 Chron. 33:3 For he built again the high places which Hezekiah his father had broken down, and he reared up altars for Baalim, and made groves, and worshipped all the host of heaven, and served them. (KJV) . . . Evil Manasseh rebuilt the pagan shrines his good father Hezekiah had destroyed. He made altars for the images of Baal. He also worshipped the stars of heaven and put up blasphemous altars for the stars of heaven in both courtyards of the Lord’s Temple.
Zeph. 1:4-5 I will also stretch out mine hand upon Judah, and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and I will cut off the remnant of Baal from this place, and the name of the Chemarims with the priests; [5] And them that worship the host of heaven upon the housetops; and them that worship and that swear by the Lord, and that swear by Malcham; (KJV) . . . History is trashed with idols and their worship. Idols are more than just a stone or metal statue. An idol can be anything or anyone that is reverenced more than God.

Idols come in many different forms: images, statues, figurines, pillars, poles, towers, rocks, etc. Idolatry can also be worship of the sun, moon and stars, but it can also be illicit sex, greed, hoarding possessions and riches, power, fame. It can also be stealing, because a thief steals because of covetousness (greed). He/she steals because he/she wants something they don’t have. ALL idolatry, no matter what kind, is a SIN! God hates it. Idol worship is common today; people trust in themselves, their money, their power and NOT in God. ALL idols will one day prove worthless, and the true God will prevail. Seek God first (Mat.6:33), and have no other gods before Him (Ex.20:3).

IDOLATRY
Chapter 6

DESCRIBED:

• Idolatry is an abomination to God.
Deut. 7:25 The graven images of their gods shall ye burn with fire: thou shalt not desire the silver or gold that is on them, nor take it unto thee, lest thou be snared therein: for it is an abomination to the Lord thy God. (KJV) . . .  Moses warned Israel not to become entrapped by the idols of the defeated nations by coveting the silver or gold on them. Do you think it’s OK to be close to sin as long as you don’t participate? Do you think, “I won’t do anything wrong!” BEWARE!!! Being close can hurt you, for you may become tempted and finally give in. Temptation is NOT a sin. It is giving in to temptation that is a sin! The only sure way to stay
away from sin is to stay away!

• Idolatry is hateful to God.
Deut. 16:22 Neither shalt thou set thee up any image; which the Lord thy God hateth. (KJV) . . . Great care should be taken to prevent following ANY idolatrous customs of the heathen. There is always a tendency to set up idols, in one form or another, in the human heart. I think of all the idols in the Catholic church and homes. Beware! God, in His Word, is very clear, He hates idolatry!
Jeremiah 44:3-4 Because of their wickedness which they have committed to provoke me to anger, in that they went to burn incense, and to serve other gods, whom they knew not, neither they, ye, nor your fathers. [4] Howbeit I sent unto you all my servants the prophets, rising early and sending them, saying, Oh, do not this abominable thing that I hate. (KJV) . . . We should realize, with all seriousness the danger of sin! If you love God, do not provoke Him by worshipping any kind of idol. If you love your soul, remember that any and all sin is destructive to your soul.

Idolatry is useless and stupid.
Psalm 115:4-8 Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men's hands. [5] They have mouths, but they speak not: eyes have they, but they see not: [6] They have ears, but they hear not: noses have they, but they smell not: [7] They have hands, but they handle not: feet have they, but they walk not: neither speak they through their throat. [8] They that make them are like unto them; so is every one that trusteth in them. (KJV) . . . When the psalms were written, many people worshiped idols: statues of wood, stone or metal. They took pride in what they could see. Today, we still may value worldly things: home, clothing, possessions, instead of eternal things: love for God, spiritual growth, salvation, Heaven. If you spend time treasuring worldly objects, you are as foolish and empty as idols. Isaiah 44:9-20 describes how people make their own gods. How absurd to make a god from the same tree that gives firewood. Do we make our own gods? Do we worship money, fame, pleasure, power, etc.? If we make a god of anything, we deceive ourselves. It will NEVER empower our lives.

  • Who do I ultimately trust?
  • Who do I look to for ultimate truth?
  • Who do I look to for security and happiness?
  • Who is in charge of my future?

I pray that your answer is none other than GOD!

Jeremiah 10:3-4 For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. [4] They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not. (KJV) . . . One of my favorite commentators says this does not apply to “Christmas trees,” because people back then didn’t know what a Christmas tree was. I disagree with him on this one. The people then didn’t know what a Christmas tree was, but God knew what people in our time would do (Isa.46:9-10). Our precious Lord was not born on 12/25. That was the date that people celebrated the birthday of the sun god, Tammuz. Christmas was actually celebrated thousands of years before Jesus was even born! And it was on 12/25 that it was celebrated. Christmas did NOT originate with God. I think that “Christmas” is abominable to Jesus! He NEVER told us to celebrate His birth . . . only His DEATH! (1 Cor.11:23-31).
1 Peter 4:3 For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries: (KJV) . . . A person changes radically at conversion, IF they are sincere about Jesus, and their commitment to Him. Contempt and ridicule may be experienced from your old friends. You may be totally ignored and scorned not only because you refuse to participate in certain activities, but also because your priorities have changed and you are now headed in the opposite direction. Your new life incriminates their sins. They feel very uneasy around you. A baby Christian is in trouble without the help mature believers, because they will need help resisting pressures of opposition; they will need encouragement to be faithful to Christ. All the above things mentioned really are idolatry: wasteful spending, excessive pursuit of pleasure, drinking to excess, doing drugs, wild parties, illicit sex, etc.

Idolatry is ineffective.
Judges 10:14 Go and cry unto the gods which ye have chosen; let them deliver you in the time of your tribulation. (KJV) . . . Don’t let anyone tell you that following Jesus is easy to do, that living a Christian life is easy. Some people think that once they make a decision for Christ, everything will be smooth sailing. They can sit back and relax. WRONG! Satan will be at you double time! He hates Jesus, and he does not want you to have anything to do with Him. Satan wants you back on his side (1 John 3:10), back to being his child again, NOT God’s child! It is not only difficult to follow God over the long haul, friend, it is absolutely impossible on your own! Since our ministry serves many prison units, I see many people who seem to be on fire for the Lord. But, when the majority of these people get released, they go right back to their old ways . . . unto the gods they had served before being incarcerated, on the streets with their old friends. These gods (idols) can NEVER deliver (help) you in the time of your tribulation! Only the One and Only TRUE God can do that, if you haven’t angered Him with sin, so that He turns away from you. Please stay on God’s side. You won’t regret it, even if the going does get rough. Just as a loving parent feels rejected when a child rebels, so God feels great rejection when we ignore or neglect Him (1 Sam.8:4-9; 10:17-19; John 12:44-50). We should exert ourselves to stay close to God rather than see how far we can go before judgment comes.
Isaiah 46:7 They bear him upon the shoulder, they carry him, and set him in his place, and he standeth; from his place shall he not remove: yea, one shall cry unto him, yet can he not answer, nor save him out of his trouble. (KJV) . . . The people carried idols around on their shoulders, and when they would set it down, it stayed there. It couldn’t move. And when someone prayed to it, there was no answer. It had no power to get anyone out of trouble, no matter how long and hard they cried to it. Idols simply are useless and ineffective. They can NEVER help you in any way!

• Idolatry is absurd, stupid.
Romans 1:21-23 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. [22] Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, [23] And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. (KJV) . . . How supposedly intelligent people can turn to idolatry is a mystery to me. Idolatry starts when people reject what they know about God and rebel against Him. Instead of seeing God as the Creator and sustainer of all life, they are so self-reliant and self-sufficient, they see themselves as the center of everything. Soon they are whoring after gods that are convenient for their own selfish plans. These gods may be wooden or metal images, but they may also be goals or things we pursue such as money, power, pleasure, fame or comfort. They may even be falsifying God Himself . . . making God in our image, instead of the way it should be. Idolaters worship things that God made, instead of worshipping God Himself. Is there something that you feel you can’t live without? Are your priorities something other than God? Are your dreams something you would never sacrifice? Is God first in your life, or is it something (or someone) else? Do you worship God or are you worshipping something stupid?

Idolatry is defiling, polluted, corrupt.
Ezekiel 20:7 Then said I unto them, Cast ye away every man the abominations of his eyes, and defile not yourselves with the idols of Egypt: I am the Lord your God. (KJV) . . . God told the people to get rid of their idols, and not to defile themselves with the Egyptian gods. People’s hearts are woefully hardened when they refuse to stop sin, even when they suffer from it. God is rightly angry with all those who are determined to go on in their trespasses. They defile themselves with the idols.
Ezekiel 36:18 Wherefore I poured my fury upon them for the blood that they had shed upon the land, and for their idols wherewith they had polluted it: (KJV) . . . They polluted the land with murder and by worshiping idols, so God poured out His fury on them. The people’s sins defiles their land; causes it to become abominable to God. God’s Holy Name is His great Name; and His perfect holiness is His greatness.

If God’s people do not worship Him today, it is because they have shaped their opinion of God to fit their own meager understanding. They have measured Him by thir intellect and expect Him to answer all of their ways. My friend, our brains are not adequate to handle His answers. Some people worship only when they decide God has lived up to their expectations. Tears magnify grief, smiles magnify joy, and worship magnifies God. Worship is not just words of praise and adoration, but our voicing our humility, admitting we are nothing compared to the almighty Creator God of the Universe!

IDOLATRY
Chapter 7

CONSIDER THOSE WHO PRACTICE IDOLATRY:

• Idolatry causes you to forget God.
Deut. 8:19 And it shall be, if thou do at all forget the Lord thy God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I testify against you this day that ye shall surely perish. (KJV) . . . God, in His Word, assures you that if you ever forget the Lord your God and follow other gods, by worshiping and bowing down to them, you will absolutely perish in Hell (Rev.20:15; 21:8; 22:15).

• Idolatry causes you to go astray from God.
Ezekiel 44:10 And the Levites that are gone away far from me, when Israel went astray, which went astray away from me after their idols; they shall even bear their iniquity. (KJV) . . . The Levites who abandoned God when Israel strayed away from Him to worship idols bore the consequences of their unfaithfulness, but it is the same with anyone today who is unfaithful to God!

• Idolatry causes you to defile the sanctuary of God.
Ezekiel 5:11 Wherefore, as I live, saith the Lord God; Surely, because thou hast defiled my sanctuary with all thy detestable things, and with all thine abominations, therefore will I also diminish thee; neither shall mine eye spare, neither will I have any pity. (KJV) . . . In the Old Testament, it was a serious thing to defile the Temple, God’s sanctuary, by worshiping idols and practicing evil within its very walls. God hated their abominations! And He states very clearly here that He would NOT spare those who did this. He would show no pity. BUT . . . haven’t people in today’s time defiled God’s Temple with idols and really vile practices? No! You say! YES! I say! In the New Testament, we learn that God makes His home within those who are His. Our bodies are God’s Temple.
1 Cor. 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? (KJV) . . . IF you are a TRUE child of God, your body is the Temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God. You belong to GOD! We defile God’s temple today by gossip, bitterness, hatred of others, love of money, lying or any other wrong actions or attitudes. But it does NOT stop there! You also defile God’s Temple by ALL illicit and immoral sex, abortion, drugs, alcohol, gluttony, etc.

• Idolatry causes you to be estranged from God.
Ezekiel 14:5 That I may take the house of Israel in their own heart, because they are all estranged from me through their idols. (KJV) . . . All people have someone or something that they devote their heart to. All people are capable of idolatry. God wants the hearts of His people. We must not allow anything to charm our loyalty away from God, and we should not replace or weaken our devotion to God. Being estranged (disloyal, unfriendly) to God is messing with your eternal future. Think about it.

Idolatry causes you to forsake God.
2 Kings 22:17 Because they have forsaken me, and have burned incense unto othefgods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands; therefore my wrath shall be kindled against this place, and shall not be quenched. (KJV) . . . Starting with Adam and Eve’s lives, people have forsaken God, have rebelled against God, and have thought they were wiser than God . . . but friend, NO one is wiser than God. From the start, God’s people have abandoned Him and worshiped pagan gods. He was angry with His people then, and He is angry with His people today! His anger against idolatry and ALL sin will not be quenched. Judgment awaits those who forsake, rebel or hate Him.

Idolatry causes you to provoke God.
Jeremiah 25:6 And go not after other gods to serve them, and to worship them, and provoke me not to anger with the works of your hands; and I will do you no hurt. (KJV) . . . If you stay right with God, and not make Him angry by idolatry, He will not harm you. Again, I bring up eternity. Our souls are eternal, if you believe it or not. You shall spend eternity in one of two places . . . and you do NOT want to go to Hell! Write and ask for our booklet on “Eternity,” also “Heaven VS Hell.”

Idolatry causes you to ask counsel of their idols.
Hosea 4:12 My people ask counsel at their stocks, and their staff declareth unto them: for the spirit of whoredoms hath caused them to err, and they have gone a whoring from under their God. (KJV) . . . Divining rods was a way of attempting to tell the future. They cannot tell them the future! People are like adulterers, serving other vain, useless gods and deserting the true God. Anything to do with divination, sorcery, witchcraft, mediums, spiritists, or anyone who consults the dead (Deut.18:9-14) is WRONG! It is SIN! In fact, sorcerers were to be put to death (Ex.22:18). Occult practices were carried on in the name of pagan gods. The occult has Satan and demons for their information; God does not reveal His will to them. God speaks through His own channels: the Bible, His Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. BEWARE! Lev.17:7; Deut. 32:17; 2 Chron. 11:15; Psalm 106:37 also speak of devil worship. STAY AWAY from it and all forms of the occult.

• Idolatry causes you to boast of it.
Psalm 97:7 Confounded be all they that serve graven images, that boast themselves of idols: worship him, all ye gods. (KJV) . . . God makes it clear that idol worshipers give their highest loyalty to something other than God. One day we will stand before God in all His glory and power. Then we will see all our goals and accomplishments for what they really are. Our earthly pursuits will seem stupid then!

ANGEL WORSHIP is IDOLATRY!

I will include the worship of angels in this chapter. We are NOT to worship angels in any manner, at any time!

Angels are NOT to be worshipped.
Col. 2:18 Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, (KJV) . . . There are false teachers who claim that God can be approached only by angels. The  Bible teaches that angels are God’s servants, and it forbids worshiping them (Ex.20:3-4). Let God’s Word be your guide, not other people opinions.
Rev. 19:10 And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy. (KJV) . . . Only God is worthy of worship. The angel quickly scolded John and told him to worship GOD! Also see Rev. 22:8-9. Angel worship is idolatry! Worship God and God alone!

IDOLATRY
Chapter 9

Closing Comments

In the beginning, God created man, and He gave him some compelling aims: self-preservation, procreation and the deeply instilled desire seek and worship a supernatural being or force. But, Satan is always there to tempt us with some vain thing, or take advantage of us in some vulgar, deceitful way.

We all have a sort of void or vacancy within our soul. This God-shaped blank or hole seems to be constantly searching for something to fill it. The only perfect and right answer is our Almighty Creator God, the One and Only TRUE God in the Universe. But, since most people want no part of this God, they search for something else, and the void remains unfilled! And there are literally thousands of other “gods” (idols) in the world. So, what do they do? People go after a god that is not as demanding as God is, or so they think. It is impossible to be neutral. Every person has a master . . . either God or sin (Satan). A Christian is not someone who cannot sin, but someone who is no longer a slave to sin. He or she belongs to God. God’s rules are not bad, but good for us. He has a good reason for anything that He tells us not to do, but most do NOT take time to understand this. God also has a good reason when He tells us to do something, for instance obeying Him.

God is very loving, caring and compassionate in His concern for His children. God is good! But, God is also a God of wrath. Now THIS, people do NOT want to hear! They want to hear that God loves everyone! That God will send everyone to Heaven! My friend, this is NOT true! Everyone will NOT go to Heaven! In fact, the vast majority of all the people who have ever lived, or ever will live, are doomed for Hell (Mat.7:13-14). Jesus says so! Now, that’s another thing people do not want to hear! If a preacher today preaches on hellfire and brimstone, he won’t be there long. People will go only if they hear what they want to hear, not the Truth (Isa.30:10; 2 Tim. 4:3-4).

The Truth is, that God hates sin, ALL sin, and that includes idolatry. God is definitely a God of wrath and He will punish sin with a vengeance. You shall one day stand before the Almighty Judge, whether you believe this or not! This is stated over and over in the Bible. And if you are not saved, not one of God’s children, and have not been forgiven for your sin; you shall be judged for every sin you have ever committed, and be cast into the lake of fire (Rev.20:15).
Matthew 16:27 For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works. (KJV)
Rev. 20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. (KJV) . . . Your name is written in the book of life when you believe and accept Christ Jesus as your Saviour and Lord (John 1:12-13; 3:3; 1 John 5:10-12). To believe means to trust and obey God! Doesn’t it make sense to be right with God, and stay that way?

Does idol worship exist today? YES! People still forsake God, still rebel against God, and still worship idols of some kind, world wide!

One of the greatest disrespects for God in today’s world is marriage. People, including some professing “Christians,” think God’s way is the old way and they no longer accept it. “Things change” is what you hear over and over again. My friend, God NEVER changes! (Mal.3:6; Jam.1:17; Heb.1:11-12).

ALL unclean sexual practices are considered sin to God (Col.3:5-6). Fornication is a major sin (Acts 15:20, 29; 21:25), and it is a lusting sexual appetite (1 Thes.4:3-5). Wanting something you don’t have is covetousness, and that is greed, which is idolatry (Eph.5:5).

Another disrespect for God is theft. “How can stealing be idolatry?” you ask. A thief steals because of covetousness, wanting something they do not have.
Col. 3:5-6 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: [6] For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience: (KJV) . . . No immoral, impure, or greedy person will inherit the Kingdom of God (Heaven), because a greedy person is really an idolater who worships the things of this world. Don’t be fooled by thinking you can excuse these sins. You cannot excuse them! The terrible anger of God shall come down upon ALL those who disobey Him, like a ton of bricks!

A great disrespect for God and Christ, is images and statues of any kind! Many of today’s “churches” have images that are used in their worship services. WHO are they worshipping? Is it God? NO! God says NO! See for yourself what His Word tells us.
Lev.26:1 Ye shall make you no idols nor graven image, neither rear you up a standing image, neither shall ye set up any image of stone in your land, to bow down unto it: for I am the Lord your God. (KJV) . . . Do NOT make idols or set up carved images. Very clear, isn’t it?
Deut. 27:15 Cursed be the man that maketh any graven or molten image, an abomination unto the Lord, the work of the hands of the craftsman, and putteth it in a secret place. And all the people shall answer and say, Amen. (KJV) . . . CURSED is anyone who carves or sets up idols. The worship of these is detestable to the Lord. An abomination! Very clear! The Bible strictly forbids having images for religious purposes and bowing down to them, or lighting candles to them.

I’m sure it’s not the intention of millions of people to participate in idol worship, and you may not think it is idol worship. But, it does NOT matter what you think . . . what is important is what God thinks!
Jonah 2:8 They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy. (KJV) . . . To worship false gods is turning your back on all God’s mercies. IF you worship worthless idols, you forfeit God’s love and amazing grace, and you abandon any hope whatsoever for His mercy. ANY object of our devotion that replaces God (or adds to God) is a lying vanity. We must worship God and God alone!

When you worship ANY idol or image, or pay ANY homage whatsoever to them, you deceive yourself with something that is absolutely worthless and stupid. Is something taking God’s rightful place in your life? Are you adding something (idols, images) to your worship? I strongly advise that you make a 180 degree turn and RUN from it! Don’t fool around with idolatry! Make God #1!

Devil worship is on the rise. The church of Satan boasts of thousands of members in this country and around the world. The worship service begins when a nude woman, lying on an altar, is sexually violated by the high priest. Those who are lewd and fond of sensuous pleasure are attracted to the church of Satan; and its religious holidays are recognized as valid by the armed services of this nation. This false church, goes back to the beginning of time, and has now come boldly out of secrecy and into the open in our lifetime, and is threatening to wrap its cold, murderous arms around the youth of our nation, seducing them to hideous beliefs and practices.

Satan worship is more widespread than you may imagine. Satan worship is practiced by thousands of children. Many children get involved with devil worship through rock music, which has lyrics that impress on their minds gross things, through repetition and an intense beat.

The world has a phenomenal growth of demonic activity. Every newspaper and magazine has an astrology (horoscopes) column. Bookstores are flooded with books about the occult, Satanism, New Age philosophy, reincarnation, Eastern meditation, and mysticism. People like Shirley MacLaine, who are frequent talk-show guests, are eagerly telling their message to the naive and unenlightened. Rock stars are singing the message of demons, drugs, hate, murder, etc.

Satanic worship and every form of the occult are everywhere. It’s estimated that at least one million Americans mess around with some form of Black Magic. New Orleans is well known for this wicked atrocity, yet people flock to the Mardi Gras. After Hurricane Katrina’s devastation, president Bush spoke highly of New Orleans. Is it possible that the hurricane was simply a warning from God to the people there?

Animal sacrifice is reportedly practiced by satanic cults and by the Santeria sect. Followers of Santeria, allegedly kills goats, sheep, and chickens during religious rites. Members of satanic cults are also believed to torture and kill animals during certain ceremonies.

Idolatry is worldwide! Idolatry is wicked! Idolatry is an abomination to God! ALL idolatry is a sin, from what you may think is unimportant to Satanic worship!

Please consider this! The wrath of God shall come down hard on all who worship idols! His judgment will be sure and certain, casting all those who participate into a burning lake of fire and brimstone (Rev.20:15), where you shall be forever separated from the Lord and from His glorious power.
2 Thes. 1:8-9 In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: [9] Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power; (KJV)

I pray you know the Christ Jesus as your Saviour and Lord. I also pray that you do not participate in any kind of idol worship.

DO YOU WANT TO BE SAVED??

Think about the following:

  • Life is short (Job 14:2; Ps.102:11; 144:4).
  • Death is sure (Heb.9:27; Jam.4:14).
  • Hell is agony (Mat.13:42; Rev.20:15).
  • Eternity is long (Mat.18:8; 25:41, 46).
  • There are NO exit doors in Hell (Isa.33:14; Rev.20:10).

What must I do to be saved?

Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved. One simple step! Believe!
John 1:12-13 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: [13] Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. (KJV) . . . BELIEVE on His Name!
Romans 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. (KJV) . . . BELIEVE in your heart!
Ephes. 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: [9] Not of works, lest any man should boast. (KJV) . . . Your faith allows you to BELIEVE!
Philip. 2:11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (KJV) . . . You glorify God the Father when you BELIEVE and confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, for it is God’s will, that all men should honor the Son just as they honor the Father (John 5:23).
No one knows how soon it will be too late!

IDOLATRY

Most commit the sin of idolatry,
And it leads to eternal Hell’s agony.
So many things in life, take the Lord’s place,
Which leads to great displeasure, on His Face.

With money and riches, Satan does tempt,
And not one person, from it is exempt.
Storing treasures on Earth, is stupidity,
For all the world offers, is temporary.

Treasures in Heav’n, should be first on our mind,
When we lust for wealth, Satan our eyes blinds.
Idolatry dear one, is covetousness,
When we’re greedy for gain, God will not bless.

Idolatry can be, any pleasure,
Sports or sex, or leisure without measure.
Anything you put above God, is wrong,
You’re speeding down the broad road, with a throng.

IDOLATRY

Idolatry is a serious thing,
For it, the wrath of God, on you does bring.
Anything above God, that you place,
Means one day, condemnation you’ll face.

Riches, an idol that leads astray,
Love of money, tempts us ev’ry day.
To place above God, what wealth can buy,
Is dreadful sin, in God’s Holy Eye.

Pleasure too, can be idolatry,
From this idol, very few are free.
Sports of all kinds, make people go wild,
Pleasure makes folks forget, they’re God’s child.

Idolatry is glory and fame,
These, never think of Jesus’ Name.
They want the world to see all they do,
Pride, pride, pride; don’t let it get to you.

It is a jealous God that we serve,
Our love and affections, He deserves.
He must be first in our life, always,
If we want to travel, Heav’n’s highway.

Idolatry leads only to Hell,
Where all walking the broad road, shall dwell.
Trust and obey Christ Jesus this day,
For just He can show you, Heav’n’s display.
